Elon Musk States That Colonizing Mars Is Essential to Ensure the Survival of Human Life Given the Inevitable Fate of Earth

Recently, Elon Musk reiterated his long-term plan to save humanity. In an interview with Fox News, the billionaire explained why he insists on the idea of making Mars the next home for human civilization.

The Inevitable Threat

According to Musk, life on Earth is doomed to disappear at some point. “Eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the Sun,” he stated.

He explained that the Sun is becoming warmer and brighter over time, which will eventually destroy the atmosphere and evaporate the planet’s oceans. The final prediction? Earth will be completely engulfed by the Sun in about five billion years.

“Mars is a life insurance policy for collective life. So, eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the Sun. The Sun is gradually expanding, so at some point, we need to be a multiplanetary civilization because Earth will be incinerated,” Elon Musk said.

For him, the only possible path is to become a multiplanetary civilization. “That’s one of the benefits of Mars; it’s a life insurance policy for collective life,” Musk told host Jesse Watters.

The entrepreneur estimates that we have about 450 million years before conditions become completely uninhabitable.

Fate of the Sun

The Sun, with a radius of about 700,000 kilometers, will expand until it becomes a red giant. The NASAA reported that at this stage, it could engulf Mercury, Venus, and possibly even Earth. This is not expected to happen for about 5 billion years, according to scientists.

For Elon Musk, Mars needs to be more than a symbolic destination. He wants to build a self-sustaining city on the red planet. The idea is to ensure the survival of humanity, even if Earth faces a collapse.

Musk explained that if the city on Mars relies on ships from Earth to exist, the plan has failed. “If the resupply ships stop, Mars needs to keep going,” he stated.

According to him, this would be true “life insurance” for human civilization.

Mars at the Center of Plans

Mars is the primary target of SpaceX, the company founded by Musk with the goal of taking humans to the red planet.

The idea is to create a permanent presence that allows the species to survive in case a catastrophic event hits Earth.

To achieve this, SpaceX is betting everything on Starship — the largest rocket ever built. Fully reusable, the rocket promises to reduce the costs of space travel and make Mars colonization feasible.

Advances and Challenges

Starship has already been launched eight times. In 2025, two test missions were conducted, one in January and another in March.

Both achieved good results in taking off with the Super Heavy booster. However, the upper stage, simply called Ship, exploded before completing ten minutes of flight on both occasions.

Despite the explosions, SpaceX considers the missions partially successful. The company has already tested the engines for the next launch, which will be Flight 9. There is currently no confirmed date for this new test.

Musk’s plan continues. Even with setbacks, he remains optimistic that Starship will be the key to ensuring the future of humanity beyond Earth.
