When Meteorites Fell in the Pernambuco Hinterland, Scientists Discovered Billions-Year-Old Relics and Locals Saw a Rare Opportunity for Immediate Profit.

In August 2020, the sky over the Pernambuco hinterland was the stage for a rare and unforgettable phenomenon. Space fragments from the Asteroid Belt crossed Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and fell on the town of Santa Filomena, in the interior of Pernambuco.

What began as an astronomical curiosity turned into a true race for space rocks.

The Origin of the Cosmic Rain

Between Mars and Jupiter, there is a vast belt of orbiting rocks called the Asteroid Belt. Formed by billions of celestial bodies, this region typically keeps its fragments revolving around the Sun.

However, from time to time, some of these rocks detach from their usual trajectory. In 2020, some of these wandering pieces fell to Earth, entering the atmosphere with such speed that they ignited from the friction with the gases.

These celestial bodies were named meteors. Some of them were completely pulverized, but about 80 kilograms managed to withstand the heat and impact.

On August 19 of that year, these meteorites touched Brazilian soil, more precisely in Santa Filomena and its surroundings, marking a historic moment for the town.

From Space to Rooftops

The episode gained national and international repercussion. Experts, curious individuals, and meteorite hunters came from various parts of the world to witness the phenomenon and try to acquire a piece of space.

One of the most important fragments was found on the roof of a local resident’s house. Weighing 2.8 kilograms, the rock was named Meteorito Santa Filomena and became part of the collection at the National Museum.

The discovery drew attention not only for its size but primarily for its scientific characteristics. Chemical tests revealed that the meteorite is 4.56 billion years old, making it older than any rock found on Earth. Its composition includes four minerals, one of which is called troilite, which does not exist naturally on our planet.

Speed and Resistance

Researchers also estimated that the rock entered the atmosphere at a speed of 54,000 kilometers per hour. The external appearance of the meteorite confirms this violent journey: its crust shows marks, burns, and deep cracks.

A piece even broke off upon impact with the roof. Still, the stone survived its long journey and was collected in time for study.

Researcher Amanda Tosi highlighted the importance of the quick recovery of the meteorite. According to her, many of these rocks are lost over time, as they can end up being confused with ordinary stones when they fall. “This fragment is fresh; it won’t suffer from the elements like rain and erosion,” she explained.

Business in the Hinterland

While scientists analyzed the meteorites, another phenomenon was taking place in the streets of Santa Filomena. The town became a center for improvised commerce. Residents who found the stones began selling them to foreigners offering cash. The town’s only inn became a meeting point for sellers and buyers.

Initially, the gram of the stones was sold for c. With the increased demand, the price reached R$ 40 per gram. Many local families, unaware of the true scientific value of the fragments, saw in those rocks a unique opportunity for profit.

International Market and High Profits

The most mentioned name among buyers was that of American Michael Farmer, known for acquiring meteorites worldwide. He put together a catalog of more than 35 fragments from Santa Filomena, which he promoted on his Facebook page. The stones were being sold for prices well above the local practices.

One example was a piece weighing 8.98 grams, sold for US$ 270 — equivalent to R$ 2,400 at the time. A stone weighing 235 grams was listed for US$ 4,700, exceeding R$ 26,000. The prices, which varied according to the size and quality of the stone, showed how the event had generated profits for those who knew how to negotiate.

Science and Commerce Side by Side

The meteor shower that hit Santa Filomena was marked by two distinct paths. On one side, science celebrated the discovery of a rare artifact, with incalculable historical and geological value.

On the other, locals and hunters saw the opportunity to transform space rocks into money, often without knowing exactly what they had on their hands.

Five years after the event, the case still resonates. The town of Santa Filomena began to be remembered as the place where the sky rained valuable rocks in the middle of the hinterland.

The image of people walking around with fragments in their hands, negotiating prices with foreigners in front of an inn, remains alive in the memories of those who witnessed that unusual August.

Today, the Meteorito Santa Filomena is still on display at the National Museum and continues to be studied by experts. At the same time, fragments sold during those days still circulate around the world, in private collections and online catalogs.

The sky that brought science also brought opportunity, and Santa Filomena will forever be etched in the history of the planet’s great meteorite falls.
