In Addition to Positive Environmental Impact, Project Generates Income for Local Community and Promotes Circular Economy

The fishermen from the “Baía Limpa” project, supported by Ocyan and carried out in partnership with BVRio, have already removed 10 tons of waste from Guanabara Bay in just one month of collection. About 20 fishermen from two traditional colonies in Caju, Maré, and Ilha do Fundão are dedicating two days a week to the ‘fishing’ of waste, aiming to remove 100 tons from Guanabara Bay in 12 months.

Per day, more than one ton of waste is collected. The 10 tons were removed in just seven days of fishing. A variety of waste has been collected, ranging from small debris to bulky objects, totaling about four tons of different types of plastic, 500kg of glass, electronics, one ton of textile materials, more than 200kg of flip-flops and also three sofas. Most of the collection occurs in the mangroves, which host vital ecosystems for coastal areas, essential for sustaining marine life and also a source of food and income for the local population.

Gileuda Silva Barbosa, known as Branca,an artisanal fisherwoman involved in the project, shares: “Our biggest dream is to have a clean bay. We have fishermen who have been working here for over 40 years, and they say it is very painful to see so much trash. The fisherman sleeps and wakes up dreaming of the sea’s sway, and with this trash having a proper destination. When we pick up this trash, bag it, and take it to the dump, it is very gratifying because we know that trash will no longer be in our fishing nets.”

In addition to the positive environmental impact, the project also benefits the local community, supporting 20 families and providing income through the collection and proper disposal of waste. Part of these materials is sent for recycling, contributing to the circular economy and reducing waste.

Pedro Succar, a circular economy specialist from BVRio, highlights the important social impact of Baía Limpa, as fishermen can no longer sustain their families solely through traditional fishing. He emphasizes that “this project has been the source of livelihood for these groups” and highlights the social and environmental character of the initiative that provides income and dignity to fishermen while contributing to the cleaning of the Bay. This, in turn, results in increased marine life and consequently in  higher yields from fishing.

Ester Bayerl, Coordinator of Social Environmental Responsibility, Diversity, and Inclusion at Ocyan, reinforces the company’s commitment to ESG goals (environmental, social, and governance). “The project aligns with our ESG goals and our commitment to create opportunities and empower communities, contributing both to a cleaner Guanabara Bay and to a society that will enjoy the benefits of this important ecosystem in the future. Guanabara Bay is the second largest on the Brazilian coast and has been the main access to Brazilian lands for decades. We know that to clean it up, a collective effort combining government and private initiative is necessary, but it is essential that everyone does their part.”

The project is closely monitored by BVRio through the KOLEKT app, which efficiently records the quantities of materials collected by fishermen, allowing for verification and certification of the recovery and recycling of waste, in accordance with current regulations.
