Even Amid The Water Crisis, The Federal Government Is Keen On Resuming Construction Of The Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant, Which Has Been Paralyzed For More Than 30 Years. Investments For The Completion Of The Project May Reach R$ 15 Billion

In the assessment of the former rector of USP and former Secretary of the Environment and energy researcher, José Goldemberg, the Federal Government is ignoring the current water crisis when it claims to be keen on resuming the construction of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant. The nuclear power plant began construction in 1984 and incurred a debt of R$ 9 billion in financing from public banks.

Resumption Of Construction Of The Nuclear Power Plant Will Generate 1,200 KW

When The Angra 3 Construction Is Completed, The Nuclear Power Plant Will Produce 1,200 KW, Making It A Medium-Sized Plant. In The Assessment Of The Former Rector Of USP And Former Secretary Of The Environment And Energy Researcher, José Goldemberg, The Construction Of The Angra 3 Plant Does Not Address The Current Need, Which Is Ensuring Energy Supply And Combating The Water Crisis.

According To The Researcher, At Least Five Years Would Be Required To Complete It, Even If Everything Went Well, Meaning It Is Not A Priority. Goldemberg Also Highlights That The Energy Production From A Nuclear Power Plant Is More Expensive.

When Compared To Wind And Hydroelectric Plants, For Example, The Cost Of Energy From Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant Could Be Twice As Much. This Is A Global Issue, And That Is Why Investments In Nuclear Plants Are Disappearing.

Water Crisis May Result In Rationing

The Consequently Path To Avoid A Crisis In Energy Supply Is To Activate Thermoelectric Plants. Moreover, Brazil Will Have To Import The Gas That Will Be Used, Making Energy Even More Expensive. According To The Professor, If The Problem Worsens In The Future, There Is A Possibility That Rationing May Occur, Contrary To What The Minister Of Mines And Energy Bento Albuquerque States In His Declarations.

The Professor Claims That The Minister’s Statements On The Water Crisis Have Been To Reassure The Population And Also Emphasizes That We Should Immediately Enter A State Of Alert For People To Start Saving Effectively.

In The Medium Term, About Two Years From Now, Besides Investments In Wind And Solar Energy, Goldemberg States That The Best Viable Alternative Is The Treatment Of Hydroelectric Plants. It Is Useless To Have Hydroelectric Plants And Not Save Water During Rainy Periods. The Combination Of These Different Sources Will Ensure Energy Supply Even When Water Is Scarce.

Solar And Wind Energy Are The Only Solutions To Alleviate The Cost Of Electricity For Brazilians

This Year, Solar Energy In Brazil Will See An Increase In Construction. The Projection For The Sector Stands At R$ 22.6 Billion In Investments And A Capacity Expansion That May Reach 4.9 GW, Equivalent To 56% More Than The Previous Year.

The Growth Should Be Aimed Mainly At Distributed Generation, Which Will Receive An Increase Of 3.9 GW And Only 1.1 GW For Power Plants. Meanwhile, Wind Energy Concluded The First Half Of This Year With 1,422 MW Added To The Country’s Energy Matrix During The Period, Equivalent To 83% Of The Installed Capacity Since The Beginning Of The Year.

Just Last Month, Aneel Approved 284 MW For Commercial Operation, Making This Source Second Among Those With The Highest Installed Capacity In The Semester.
