Expansion of Mexican aviation advances with new Embraer jets, accelerated growth of Mexicana, and strengthening of AIFA as a strategic hub, boosting domestic connectivity, increasing passengers and revenues, as well as preparing infrastructure for future demands such as the 2026 World Cup.
Mexicana de Aviación will receive the first of seven Embraer E190-E2 jets scheduled for 2026 in May, continuing the fleet renewal plan announced by the Mexican state airline.
The expansion was detailed on April 1, during the morning press conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum, when new operational numbers for the company and Felipe Ángeles International Airport, AIFA, the airline’s main base, were also presented.
Expansion of Mexicana’s fleet and new Embraer aircraft
The data released at the meeting indicates that Mexicana intends to end 2026 with 12 aircraft and reach 20 planes in 2027, evenly distributed between the E190-E2 and E195-E2 models.

Goodbye slow and expensive internet: new laser-powered wireless technology reaches 360 Gbps and uses half the energy of Wi-Fi!
This schedule resumes the order placed with Embraer in 2024, when the Brazilian manufacturer announced the sale of 20 aircraft from the E2 family to the Mexican company, with deliveries starting in the second quarter of 2025.
In practice, the expected reinforcement for this year follows the incorporation of the first E195-E2 received in 2025.
The inaugural delivery of this model to Mexicana was recorded in early July of last year and marked the beginning of the modernization of the state-owned fleet.
Now, the move to the E190-E2 expands the operational adjustment capacity to different profiles of domestic demand, within a plan that the company has been treating as central to grow in reach and frequency.
Operational growth and number of passengers
The General Director of Mexicana, Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez, stated in the presentation that the company has already sold over 1.022 million tickets since the resumption of operations, which began at the end of 2023.
However, this figure does not equate to the total number of passengers actually transported.
According to the numbers reported at the same press conference, the airline transported about 953.6 thousand people during this period, accumulating over 19.9 thousand flight hours and more than 14.4 thousand commercial operations across the country.
This performance was presented by the company’s management as part of a consolidation process in the domestic market.
Mexicana currently operates in 14 destinations and reported achieving a satisfaction rate of over 95% among users, while also trying to expand its offerings from AIFA.
The strategy, according to the Mexican government, combines more affordable fares with routes to cities that do not receive the same attention from private companies.
New routes of Mexicana and expansion of air network
In the air network expansion calendar, the company announced that it intends to start the route to Acapulco in June.
In July, the connection to Hermosillo is expected to begin operations.
Three other destinations are expected to be announced by the end of 2026, although they have not yet been officially identified.
For the Easter season, between March 27 and April 13, the company has scheduled 402 flights and offered 53 thousand seats, in a reinforced operation.
This movement also included charter flights, tour packages, and the launch of a loyalty program.
AIFA grows in passengers, revenue, and cargo
The increase in offerings occurs in parallel with the strengthening of AIFA’s structure, the airport that concentrates Mexicana’s growth strategy.
In the same presentation, the General Director of the terminal, Isidoro Pastor Román, reported that the airport reached 18.6 million accumulated passengers by March 30, 2026.
Of this total, just over 7 million correspond to the movement recorded throughout 2025.
In financial terms, AIFA reported revenue of 555.87 million pesos between January and February 2026, an 11.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the balance presented, the airport reached the breakeven point in the first quarter of 2024.
The airport also reported significant progress in cargo movement.
Since its inauguration, AIFA has accumulated 1.136 million tons transported, of which 97% are related to import and export operations.
The administration also reported that the airport currently operates with 41 domestic routes and five international routes.
There are plans to open two more international connections in June.
Another point highlighted by the Mexican government was AIFA’s preparation to receive national delegations during the 2026 World Cup.
The expansion of Mexicana and the increase of the network from the terminal are now presented as part of a broader strategy for connectivity and strengthening the country’s air infrastructure.
