Sustainable Innovation Proposes Accessible Alternative To Bypass Intense Heat With Low Energy Consumption, Offering Practicality And Potential To Transform The Residential Refrigeration Market.

The search for innovative, economic, and sustainable solutions to face intense heat has intensified, particularly in tropical countries like Brazil.

Amid the rising cost of electricity and growing environmental concerns, an international device emerges with the potential to transform residential refrigeration: a device capable of converting common fans into an alternative to air conditioning, combining accessibility and energy efficiency.

The proposal was conceived by two students from Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore, who developed the accessory dubbed KYL.

The project gained recognition after receiving the IKEA Young Designer Award in 2018, one of the largest furniture and design networks in the world.

The international spotlight was not only due to creativity but also due to its commitment to sustainability: the KYL does not require additional electricity consumption, making it a low environmental impact alternative compared to traditional refrigeration systems.

How The Device That Turns A Fan Into An Air Conditioner Works

The KYL was designed to be attached to 40-centimeter pedestal fans, widely used in homes and workplaces.

According to the creators, the device can reduce the air temperature by up to 1.5°C using only the wind generated by the fan itself.

Although the temperature reduction may seem modest, this cooling contributes to increasing thermal comfort in enclosed spaces, especially when combined with decreased relative humidity.

The physical principle supporting the operation of the KYL is the Bernoulli Principle, formulated in the 18th century by Swiss physicist Daniel Bernoulli.

This theory establishes that an increase in the speed of a fluid, such as air, causes a reduction in pressure.

In the KYL, the air pushed by the fan passes through a triangular structure with narrow openings, which accelerates the flow and generates a slight drop in temperature at the output.

At the same time, a circular filter containing silica gel is attached to the back of the fan.

This material is known for its efficiency in absorbing moisture, promoting the circulation of drier air and enhancing the feeling of freshness in the environment.

Maintenance And Sustainability Of The Equipment

One of the most valued points in the development of the KYL is the simplicity of its maintenance and the careful selection of materials.

The silica gel filter, responsible for moisture absorption, can be easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and reactivated by being exposed to sunlight.

This eliminates the need for frequent replacements, making the usage cycle more sustainable.

The installation of the device was designed to be accessible to anyone, being carried out through leather straps with snap buttons, without the need for tools.

Regarding composition, the main body of the KYL uses polypropylene — a lightweight, durable, and recyclable plastic — while the edges are made of ABS, a material widely used in the automotive and appliance industries for its strength.

Both polypropylene and ABS are recyclable, reinforcing the project’s commitment to the circular economy.

The leather straps, also reusable, complement the sustainable design, aligning functionality, durability, and environmental concern.

Benefits Of The Equipment That Converts A Fan Into An Air Conditioner

According to the creators, the device that transforms the fan into an “air conditioner” presents four central benefits:

  • Contribution to significantly reducing electricity consumption, as it does not require greater effort from the fan
  • Decreased carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, favoring more sustainable practices
  • Financial savings for consumers, especially in places where air conditioning is frequently used
  • Extension of the lifespan of fans, since the accessory enhances performance without overloading the equipment

Popularity And Current Stage Of The Sustainable Device

Despite the recognition and potential, as of June 2025, the KYL remains in the functional prototype phase, with no commercial availability.

The project is classified as “Phase 1” by the Clean Energy Challenge, from the international platform What Design Can Do, which recognizes initiatives with environmental impact and conceptual viability.

However, there is still no public information on industrialization processes, established commercial partnerships, or expected launch dates for the market.

The latest mentions of the KYL in international media occurred in 2020 and 2021.

Since then, no new tests, technical advances, updates, or details regarding possible negotiations for large-scale production have been reported.

The device, however, remains an inspiring reference for projects aimed at democratizing technology, sustainability, and accessible solutions for everyday life.

Comparative With Traditional Air Conditioning And Energy Consumption

Traditional air conditioning units, widely used in Brazil, account for about 17% of energy consumption in Brazilian households, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released in 2023.

The high energy consumption of these devices contributes to rising electricity bills and increased greenhouse gas emissions, especially in contexts of fossil fuel sources in the energy matrix.

In this scenario, devices that use physical principles and low-cost materials, like the KYL, represent promising alternatives.

The main challenge lies in enabling large-scale production, ensuring durability and accessible maintenance, and awakening consumer interest, especially among a public accustomed to conventional technological solutions.

Sustainable Design And Social Impact

In addition to its technological function, the creation of the KYL highlights the importance of sustainable design, a concept that integrates functionality, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility.

The project also encourages democratization of access to thermal comfort, addressing demands from low-income families who often cannot afford the cost of traditional air conditioning.

Educational institutions, startups, and investors are increasingly encouraged to seek alternatives with low environmental impact and high potential for social inclusion, given the worsening of climate change and inequalities in access to technology.

Devices like the KYL reinforce that simple and innovative solutions can transform realities and stimulate new paradigms in the global refrigeration market.

After all, in light of the increasing climate extremes and energy challenges in Brazil and around the world, what sustainable innovation do you believe can truly change the daily lives of Brazilian families?
