Eco Wave Power (EWP) Is Developing New Technology And Plans To Build The First Large-Scale Wave Power Plant. The Estimate Is That US$ 150 Million Will Be Invested To Build A 77 MW Unit.

According To A Press Release Published Last Thursday (8), The Swedish Company, Eco Wave Power (EWP), Signed An Agreement With Oren Ordu Eneas For The Development Of The Largest Wave Power Plant In The World, Which Will Be Installed On The Turkish Coast Of The Black Sea. The Company, Which Developed And Patented An Intelligent And Cost-Effective Technology To Transform Ocean And Marine Waves Into Green Electricity, Was Founded In Tel Aviv, Israel, In 2011. Oren Ordu Eneas Is An Affiliate Company Of A Local Turkish Municipality.

The Project Would Begin With A 4 MW Pilot At The Port Of Ordu. Shortly After, It Would Advance To A 77 MW Plant Consisting Of A Fixed And Modular Array Of Steel Floats Articulated To Arms Equipped With A Piston. This Mechanism Of The Wave Energy Plant Would Pump A Working Fluid Through An Undersea Umbilical Pipeline To A Land-Based Transformer, Generating Sustainable Energy.

The Project Will Have An Initial Value Of US$ 150 Million; However, No Date Has Been Announced For Its Completion. According To The CEO Of Ordu Enerji, Mustafa Kemal Macit, Aiming To Build A Self-Sufficient Network In The Region, Ordu Sees EWP As An Essential Asset To Fully Realize Its Ocean Potential And Utilize Its Unlimited Energy Source To Supply Its Power Grid.

The Companies Stated In A Release That The Agreement Is The Result Of A Renewed Effort To Bring Turkey And Israel Closer Together, Symbolized By A Recent Call Between Designated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu And Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Who Agreed To Establish A New Era Of Relations Between The Two Countries, Discussing Ways To Significantly Strengthen Diplomatic And Economic Ties.

According To The Third Secretary Of The Turkish Embassy In Tel Aviv, Ayse Mehlika Yildiz Ersen, This Is An Essential Partnership That Hopes To Further Strengthen Turkey And Israel’s Ties. On The EWP Website, The Innovative Technology Used In The Wave Power Plant Has Also Been Recognized As Pioneering Technology By The Chief Scientist Of The Israeli Ministry Of Energy And Has Received The Label Of An Efficient Solution From The Solar Impulse Foundation.

The Company Also Received Donations From The European Union’s Regional Development Fund, Horizon 2020, The Israeli Ministry Of Energy, Innovate UK, And The Horizon 2020 Framework Programme Of The European Commission.

Estimates Of The Potential Capacity Size Of Wave Energy

According To Inna Braverman, CEO Of EWP, This Historic Agreement Will Allow The Company To Provide Renewable Energy With The Turkish Wave Power Plant For The First Time. With Ambitious Sustainability Goals And Regional Proximity To Its Headquarters, Turkey Is An Excellent Place To Install And Further Develop Its Innovative Technology.

Estimates Of The Potential Capacity Size Of Wave Energy Worldwide Vary Widely. According To The US Energy Information Administration, The Annual Theoretical Energy Potential Of Waves Off The U.S. Coast Is Estimated At Up To 2.64 Trillion Kwh Or The Equivalent Of Approximately 64% Of The Total Energy Generation Of The Country In 2019.

Meanwhile, The Ocean Energy Europe, A Representative Body Of The Industry In Europe, Claims That 100 GW Of Wave Energy Capacity Could Be Installed In The Region By 2050, Supplying 10% Of The Energy Demand Of Member States.
