Denso And The Construction Company Obayashi Are Advancing Wireless Charging For Electric Cars. The New Technology Could Reach The Automotive Market As Early As 2025.

The auto parts supplier Denso and the construction company Obayashi are bringing to the electric car market a new form of wireless charging and have tested road pavements capable of charging the models while they are in motion. The goal is to have the technology available starting in 2025.

Japanese Company Technology Uses Inductive Energy

During tests conducted on electric cars at the Obayashi research center in Tokyo, a small electric car was able to run continuously at 15 km/h on a route with uninterrupted lines of electric coils that were installed under the surface.

The Japanese company’s wireless charging device uses magnetic field induction, where the electricity supplied to the coils within the road generates a current in the coils of electric cars.

To make the pavement more resilient and durable for the passage of electric cars, the Japanese company reinforced the concrete with fiber, allowing the coils to be installed close to the surface for maximum efficiency. Denso, in turn, is working on the performance of the coils and the power source for the wireless charging.

Points The Japanese Company Needs To Work On To Bring Technology To Market

The installation of these coils under the pavement for wireless charging of electric cars means that the energy transfer to the electric car is lower than when plugged into a socket using an electric cable.

Another disadvantage is that production costs are also higher. However, the mechanism will eliminate the need for large batteries in electric cars and extend their range, a factor that should significantly boost the popularity of this type of vehicle.

Japanese companies are collecting test data at Obayashi’s closed course until March of next year, to determine how wireless charging technology performs on real roads.

Volvo Is Also Developing Wireless Charging For Electric Cars

Wireless Charging For Electric Vehicles? Automaker Conducts Tests

The Volvo is conducting tests of a charging solution in Sweden that may enhance the capacity to park an electric vehicle and drive later with the battery already charged, meaning a parking area that can wirelessly charge vehicles.

The wireless charging technology for electric cars, due to its size and battery performance, is a much larger challenge. Volvo states that it will start testing wireless stations in Sweden, with the testing program scheduled to last three years.

The wireless chargers will provide 40 kilowatts of power, equivalent to most fast wired chargers.
