Minas Gerais Nanotechnology and Innovation Startup in Niobium Will Launch Products with Advanced Materials for Non-Metallic Purposes, Beneficial for Humans and the Environment
The Minas Gerais startup Nanonib – Nanotechnology and Innovation in Niobium begins this year the commercialization of innovative solutions developed based on niobium-containing materials with high added value compared to competing products and benefits both for humans and for the environment. Nanonib has developed and invested in the first “nanoindustry” – an industrial unit for processing the niobium nanomaterial in Belo Horizonte, which requires a low production cost.

The startup chose Minas Gerais for the innovation environment in the state capital and for its proximity to Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração (CBMM), which is responsible for 80% of the global niobium market and located in the state.
The startup was created in 2019 in partnership with a group of private investors and incorporates the success of scientific and technological studies on various applications of niobium nanomaterials by the researcher-partners and professors at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). According to Nanonib partner and Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at UFMG, Professor Luiz Carlos Oliveira, there are over 15 years of research and development of non-metallic niobium-based solutions that have generated unprecedented products with high added value and significant economic and strategic potential for the country. “The company holds several patents and research projects involving the preparation, application, and disruptive solutions based on the niobium platform. Advanced materials and niobium nanoparticles can be used in different industries in Brazil and worldwide with easy transportation and preservation,” Oliveira states.

INNIB41® Achieved Positive Results in Inactivation, Cleaning, and Protection of Hands Against Sars-CoV-2, the Cause of Covid-19
Among the first products already developed by Nanonib and currently pending approval from the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) is the ingredient that originated INNIB41®, an antiseptic solution with tested and proven effectiveness in independent laboratories. This product is the first in the world to use niobium in its composition for this application.
“INNIB41® is ready to be launched on the market, awaiting ingredient approval from ANVISA and will also be produced in Minas Gerais by Yeva Cosmétiques based in Itaúna,” informs Nanonib’s executive director, Joel Passos. Yeva Cosmétiques was chosen for its successful involvement in the technology transfer from UFMG that resulted in a nanotechnological product for hair loss treatment called Sanctio®.
INNIB41® has shown positive results in inactivation, cleaning, and the protection of hands against Sars-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19, as well as other bacteria and viruses. Nanonib’s executive director reveals that the product demonstrated high efficacy in laboratory studies compared to gel and liquid alcohols because it provides a prolonged residual effect and protects different types of surfaces for up to 24 hours.
Joel Passos further reveals that INNIB41® has undergone tests, particularly dermatological ones, contains no solvents like alcohol, and does not cause adverse or harmful reactions to humans, making it suitable for people with sensitive skin, such as children, adolescents, the elderly, etc.
This Year a Teeth Whitener with Niobium Nanomaterials Will Be Launched, Which Does Not Use “Hydrogen Peroxide,” Fluoride, Preservatives, or Dyes
Nanonib also plans to commercialize, still this year, a teeth whitener with niobium nanomaterials, which does not use hydrogen peroxide (commonly known as “water oxygenated”), fluoride, preservatives, or dyes. “We are innovating, creating the future in non-metallic niobium and developing a series of advanced technologies and other products based on niobium that will be future active ingredients or provide disruptive solutions in areas such as cosmetics, health, and agriculture with surprising results, in addition to being non-aggressive to health and the environment,” states Passos.
The executive director of Nanonib adds that the uniqueness and high value-generating potential of the technologies developed with niobium may hold great strategic and economic interest for the state, considering that Minas Gerais is the world’s largest producer of niobium.

Global and Brazilian Giants CSN and CBMM Are Not Wasting Time, Aim for Technological Revolution and Invest in Graphene – the Powerful Material 200 Times Stronger Than Steel!
With an eye on the global technological revolution that is about to happen, if it is not already happening, two global and Brazilian giants, CSN and CBMM, are investing in a Singaporean startup focused on the development of graphene – the powerful flexible material 200 times stronger than steel, thinner than a human hair, and abundant in Brazil. This revolutionary material is set to become the next global technological revolution, with Brazil in the lead!
Inova Ventures, the venture capital vehicle of CSN, has just acquired a non-specified minority stake in 2DM, a Singapore startup focused on the development of graphene. The Brazilian steel giant CSN has initiated a working group dedicated to graphene at its research center in Volta Redonda. Meanwhile, CBMM, the largest global producer of niobium, made an investment in the startup back in 2019.
Recognized as one of the materials of the future, graphene possesses unique properties such as high resistance and high thermal and electrical conductivity. It can be used, for instance, to produce lighter and more efficient batteries or materials that are more resistant to corrosion.
The goal of 2DM is to apply the material as an additive to enhance various properties of materials for markets such as automotive, electric vehicles, aerospace, maritime, energy storage, defense, and electronics, among others.
