Senator Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN) Has High Hopes for Offshore Wind Energy and Claims the Sector Can Attract Major Investments
The offshore wind energy sector in Brazil aims for billion-dollar investments over the next 20 years. Senator Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN) maintains high hopes for the sector and stated that he has presented a bill aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for the future exploration of offshore wind power plants in Brazil, a technology still unexplored in the largest country in Latin America.
Great Potential in Energy Generation
Jean Paul commented that, given the country’s wind and solar potential, future generations will consider combustion actions and energy generation through water almost a crime. According to data pointed out by former Finance Minister Joaquim Levy, Brazil would have around 700 GW of offshore wind potential.
According to the senator, half of this potential is located in the so-called edge of the Brazilian equator, facing the Northern Hemisphere. Although the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte are the main sources, the potential extends from Amapá to the city of Touros (RN).

Bill for Offshore Wind Power Plants in Brazil
The senator’s proposal regarding offshore wind power plants, which will still be processed in Congress, comes at a time when international companies are developing the first projects of this source in the country, even though they are in the initial phase and without estimates regarding the start of implementation.
According to the bill, the federal government will approve financing for offshore wind projects through an authorization system, which he claims is, for example, easier than a concession.
Jean noted that a parliamentary front aimed at not only defending wind or solar energy but also the future energy transition and more sustainable use of natural resources for energy generation will soon be inaugurated.
