Engie’s Thermoelectric Plant, With Capacity Of 345 MW, Is Located In The Municipality Of Candiota (RS)
Engie, the largest private power generator in the country, has decided to resume the commercialization process of the Pampa Sul thermoelectric plant, located in the municipality of Candiota, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The project has a capacity of 345 megawatts of electricity and has been in commercial operation since June 2019. The coal-powered plant is no longer part of the company’s future strategy, which aims to decarbonize its portfolio by 2025.

Sale Of The Pampa Sul Thermoelectric Plant
In 2015, the company promised to decarbonize its product portfolio by 2025 and, in the past, even announced plans to sell its two thermoelectric plants in Santa Catarina, Pampa Sul and Jorge Lacerda. However, Engie backtracked on the Pampa Sul case until the thermoelectric plant was ready for operation, in order to reduce risks to potential interested parties.
In the 2014 energy auction, before Engie announced its abandonment of its global coal strategy, the Pampa Sul thermoelectric plant received an investment of more than 2 billion reais and began commercial production in June 2019. The plant uses coal extracted in Rio Grande do Sul, operates a “clean” coal combustion technology equipped with fluidized bed boilers and also has a system for reducing atmospheric emissions.

Engie’s Plant In Rio Grande Do Sul
Engie’s Pampa Sul Thermoelectric Plant has an installed capacity of 345 MW, and its construction was made possible by the A-5 energy auction in November 2014. The construction, which began the following year, was the responsibility of the Chinese company SDEPCI, which has extensive experience in cutting-edge technology projects in the thermoelectric segment.
During the four years of implementation of the Pampa Sul thermoelectric plant, a series of socio-environmental programs were designed to avoid, mitigate, and compensate for environmental impacts, as well as to optimize social investments in the surrounding region, also having as one of its technological differentials a series of equipment that enhances its operation and promotes the reduction of atmospheric emissions.
