Learn How a Brazilian Can Obtain a Visa to Work and Live in the United Kingdom

For a Brazilian to obtain a work visa in the United Kingdom, the first step is to secure a job offer from a British company willing to sponsor the visa. The most common type is the “Skilled Worker Visa,” intended for skilled workers in areas such as technology, engineering, health, and other sectors with high demand. The company offering the position must be licensed by the UK government as a “sponsor” and issue a “Certificate of Sponsorship” (COS), which is essential for the visa application.

After securing the job offer, the candidate must prove that their role is on the list of eligible occupations and that the offered salary meets the minimum criteria set by the British government. Additionally, proficiency in the English language is required, usually demonstrated through an exam like the IELTS.

The visa application process is done online, and the candidate must pay the corresponding fees, which can vary depending on the type of visa and its duration. It is also important to consider paying the “Immigration Health Surcharge,” a fee that grants access to the UK healthcare system during the residency period.

After submitting the documentation, the Brazilian must attend a visa application center to collect their fingerprints and take photos. The processing time can take from three to eight weeks, depending on the chosen option. Once approved, the visa allows the worker to live and work in the United Kingdom for up to five years, with the possibility of renewal or even application for permanent residency.

Minimum Wage in the United Kingdom in 2024

Even with the labor shortage in the United Kingdom, salaries are competitive, especially for qualified and bilingual professionals. The minimum wage is defined by hour, age, and professional experience.

The United Kingdom has two types of remuneration for workers, namely the national minimum wage for individuals aged 16 to 22, with exceptions for those working in their employer’s home or in voluntary roles, and the national living wage for workers aged 23 and over.

Considering the salary of a professional aged 23 or older who works 40 hours a week, their monthly earnings at the minimum wage in England will be £1,667. Various aspects must be taken into account when calculating a professional’s salary, from their experience to the location of their work.

On average, Brazilians can earn between £1,500 and £3,000, depending on age, hours worked, and sector. Many individuals work in the tourism, hospitality, and culinary sectors. To give an idea, delivery professionals can earn from £3 to £7 per delivery, depending on the distance and the hiring company.

As mentioned earlier, the average salary varies drastically depending on age, occupation, and a person’s location in the United Kingdom. Thus, according to ONS numbers, workers aged between 40 and 49 receive the highest weekly remuneration.
