With a Vast Network of Approximately 220,000 km of Railways, the United States Holds the Title of Country with the Largest Railroad Network in the World. This System is Predominantly Focused on Freight Transportation and Vital to the Nation’s Economy.

The United States consistently has the largest railway network in the world in total operating length, a monumental infrastructure that plays a crucial role in the country’s economy. While countries like China are rapidly advancing in high-speed trains for passengers, the American leadership in total track length, especially for freight transportation, remains unchallenged.

As of May 2025, the United States continues to be the country with the largest railway network in the world, with approximately 220,044 km of operational railways (2019 data). This length significantly exceeds that of other major railway nations like China (around 159,000 km in 2023) and Russia (about 105,000 km in 2022). While China stands out for its modern high-speed rail network, the main focus of the American system is on robust freight transportation.

Anatomy of the Giant Railway Network in the USA

The railway network in the USA comprises approximately 140,000 miles (about 225,000 km) of lines dedicated to freight transportation, operated by various companies. Amtrak, the national passenger operator, utilizes a network of about 21,400 miles, with 70% of these tracks belonging to freight railroads. Freight rail transportation accounts for about 40% of the total long-distance goods volume in the USA (measured in ton-miles).

The industry is structured as follows:

  • Class I Railroads: Six major companies (BNSF Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, and the American operations of Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City) that form the backbone, operating about 67% of the mileage and accounting for 94% of the freight sector’s revenue.
  • Class II (Regional) and Class III (Short Lines) Railroads: Hundreds of smaller companies that ensure the system’s reach, connecting industries and communities to the main network.

The Impact of Railroads on the Economy and Supply Chain of the USA

Railroads are a fundamental economic engine in the USA. In 2023, rail transportation generated US$233.4 billion in total economic output and supported nearly 750,000 jobs nationwide. The Class I railroads, predominantly private, reinvested US$26.8 billion in 2023 in infrastructure modernization. Over the past four decades, private investment in the sector has exceeded US$700 billion.

Amtrak, despite relying on public funding, also has a considerable impact, generating between US$7 to US$8 billion annually for GDP and supporting over 80,000 jobs. Railroads transport a vast range of crucial goods, from intermodal products and coal to grains, chemicals, and automobiles, being 3 to 4 times more fuel-efficient than trucks.

Condition of the Infrastructure, Recent Investments and Modernization Challenges

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), in its 2025 report, assigned the US railway sector a grade of B-, a slight decline from the B in 2021, despite funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

The freight network, privately funded, is generally considered reliable and safe. However, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC) faces an estimated maintenance deficit of US$45.2 billion. The IIJA authorized US$66 billion for railway projects (AF2022-2026), much of which is allocated to Amtrak and passenger transportation. Modernization efforts include the full implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC), defect detection systems, and cybersecurity.

Challenges and Opportunities for the US Railway Sector in the Next Decade

The American railroad sector faces challenges such as economic volatility and labor issues for freight, along with sustainability of funding and punctuality for passengers. Safety is a growing focus after incidents like the one in East Palestine. Opportunities include the expansion of passenger transportation through the “Amtrak Connects US” plan, which aims for 39 new or improved routes.

The development of high-speed trains (HST) is progressing slowly, with projects like the California High-Speed Rail and Brightline West (Las Vegas – Southern California), the latter having construction starting in 2024. In the area of sustainability, the industry is exploring battery-electric locomotives (BELs), hydrogen fuel cell locomotives, and the use of biofuels.

O Brasil tem e diversificar os números de moldas.
Aqui você tem várias rodovias todos em péssima condição, e além disso só tendo engarrafamento, a população fica mais tempo no trânsito do que trabalhando ou estudando.
