You Are Thinking Of Buying A Used Car, But Don’t Know What Mileage To Consider? This Is A Common Dilemma Among Buyers, As Mileage Is Often Seen As An Indicator Of The Vehicle’s Condition. However, Is There Really An Ideal Mileage To Make A Good Purchase?

When choosing a used car, many buyers look for newer models with fewer miles on them. Mileage is often highlighted as an important selling point, with dealers emphasizing the term “low mileage” in ads.

However, this is not the only characteristic to consider. According to experts, the overall condition of the vehicle, including the engine, suspension, and other safety items, is essential for evaluating the purchase.

“I think mileage is fundamental when buying a used car, but there is no ideal mileage because it will also depend on what you expect from the car, the type of car, and your budget,” explained technical consultant Fábio Fukuda.

He emphasizes that while vehicles with lower mileage may have fewer problems, there is no magic number that guarantees the quality of the car.

How To Calculate The Ideal Mileage?

Fábio Fukuda suggests a practical approach: calculate the average annual mileage of the car. According to him, “the legal average for normal car use is between 10,000 and 15,000 km driven per year. Above that, it’s a heavily used car and that’s where I start to get more concerned.”

Therefore, when evaluating a used car, it is important to consider whether the mileage is within that range in relation to the vehicle’s year of manufacture.

Be Careful With Mileage Tampering

One of the most common fraudulent practices in the used car market is tampering with the odometer to show a lower mileage than is real. This can make the vehicle more attractive to unsuspecting buyers.

However, buyers have simple ways to find out if they are facing a vehicle with tampered mileage.

Signs of wear on items such as the steering wheel, gear shift knob, driver’s seat, and pedals can indicate excessive use, inconsistent with the advertised mileage.

If these parts are too new for the age of the car, this can also be a sign that components have been replaced to deceive the buyer.

Another important tip is to check the owner’s manual. In some cases, the vehicle may have undergone services that indicate a mileage higher than that recorded on the dashboard.

If this is the case, it is best to cancel the purchase and look for another vehicle, avoiding unpleasant surprises in the future.

In Other Words, Mileage Is Not Everything, But It Is A Good Starting Point

So, what is the ideal mileage to buy a used car? The answer is not simple, as it depends on various factors, including the type of vehicle, maintenance history, and what you expect from the car.

Thus, keeping an eye on mileage is important, but it is also crucial to consider the overall condition of the vehicle and be alert for possible fraud.
