First Niobium Nanomaterials Factory in the World Licensed to Operate Using the Product for Non-Metallic Purposes is in Minas Gerais

The startup Nanonib – Nanotechnology and Innovation in Niobium received from the government of the State of Minas Gerais the Technical-Operational Conditions (CTO) certificate and the sanitary permit, thus Brazil now has the first niobium nanomaterials factory in the world licensed to operate using the product for non-metallic purposes. The license allows the company to produce various beauty, health, and agribusiness items.

A spray that protects surfaces from the new coronavirus for a period of one day will be the company’s first non-metallic product launched on the market. For this, the company awaits licensing from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). The expectations are that sales will begin as early as April.

The spray will be manufactured in partnership with Yeva Cosmétiques, located in Itaúna, in the Midwest of the State. While the startup will produce the input that contains niobium in its composition, Yeva Cosmétiques will manufacture the product.

Niobium Spray That Protects Surfaces from the New Coronavirus Will Cost Around R$ 35.00

According to the company, the spray that protects surfaces from the new coronavirus is expected to be sold for a price between R$ 35 and R$ 40, and projections are that sales will total R$ 35 million in the first year.

“We discovered a way to manipulate niobium and turn it into advanced materials for various fields,” says Nanonib’s CEO, Joel Passos. He remembers that the company is composed of professors from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), who have been researching the product for about 15 years, as well as groups of investors.

The company plans to launch about seven to eight products made from niobium nanomaterials in 2021, “completely disruptive and innovative,” affirms Passos.

Among the company’s creations is a cream that uses niobium nanoparticles for the treatment of psoriasis – it is a cosmetic, not a medicine – and a whitening toothpaste.

Nanonib Wants to Supply Niobium Products for Agribusiness and Enter the International Market

Nanonib, according to Passos, is also finalizing an agreement with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), involved with a product for protecting plants against fungi and bacteria in agribusiness.

“We are transforming knowledge accumulated at UFMG for over 15 years. We want to demystify niobium. It is considerably abundant in the earth, but the mines in Minas Gerais are the easiest in the world,” he says.

Wanting to expand its business, the company is looking at the international market and has made various contacts with other locations. There have even been discussions with countries such as Japan, Italy, and the United States.

Nanonib – Nanotechnology and Innovation in Niobium was established in 2019 and has a nanofactory in the Technological Park of Belo Horizonte (BHTec).
