Published on April 15, 2025, the Government of Pernambuco announced the expansion of the Bom Prato program with the opening of three new community kitchens in Jupi, Altinho, and Igarassu, raising the network to 194 operational units in the 12 development regions of the state and reinforcing the food security policy.
On Friday, the 11th, the kitchens in Jupi and Altinho were inaugurated, both with evening service focused on dinner, while on this Monday the 14th, Igarassu received its second unit of the Bom Prato program, identified by the government as another step in the fight against hunger and in protecting families in social vulnerability.
Expansion of the Bom Prato Program in All Regions of the State
According to the state government, the initiatives strengthen the fight against hunger and promote food security for the vulnerable population in all regions of Pernambuco.

With the inaugurations in Jupi, Altinho, and Igarassu, the Bom Prato program now operates 194 community kitchens in full operation, with 139 implemented in the current administration, present in the 12 development regions of the state.
The declared strategy is to spread community kitchens in sensitive points of the territory, bringing the offer of hot meals closer to areas with higher records of food insecurity.
In the design of the Bom Prato program, the units function as permanent public equipment for food distribution, integrating social policies, assistance, and nutrition.
Jupi Receives First Community Kitchen with Daily Dinners
In Jupi, in the Southern Agreste, the new unit of the Bom Prato program is the first community kitchen in the municipality.
Named Cozinha Comunitária Guiomar Baia da Silva, the space honors Dona Guiosa, former cafeteria worker at the State School Sebastião Tiago de Oliveira, remembered for her dedication to the students.
The memory of the cafeteria worker is used as a symbol of care and dignified food in the community.
The kitchen team consists of six professionals, including a nutritionist, cook, two kitchen assistants, a general services assistant, and a security guard.
The official expectation is to serve about 200 daily meals at dinner, transforming the evening into a guaranteed time for access to hot food for families in vulnerability in the municipality.
Altinho Expands Night Service for Vulnerable Population
In the municipality of Altinho, in the Central Agreste, the new unit of the Bom Prato program expands service to the population in situations of social vulnerability, previously referred by the Social Assistance Reference Centers, the CRAS.
This referral formalizes access and connects the community kitchen to the existing social protection network in the municipality.
Also operating at night, the community kitchen in Altinho reinforces the offer of dinners for families living with unstable income and food insecurity.
According to the government, the proposal is that adequate food at the end of the day serves as a continuous support line, ensuring at least one complete meal for those in greatest need.
Igarassu Gains Second Unit Focused on Prepared Lunches
In Igarassu, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, the second community kitchen of the Bom Prato program was inaugurated this Monday, the 14th, honoring Luzinete Doralice de Amorim, a well-known figure in the city for providing meals marked by a flavor fondly remembered by residents.
The choice of the name reinforces the idea of an emotional bond between food, memory, and community.
Unlike Jupi and Altinho, the new unit in Igarassu will operate from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., focusing on lunches.
The team consists of eight professionals, including cooks and assistants, responsible for the preparation and distribution of meals.
The combination of a second unit and extended hours aims to increase service coverage and reduce gaps in access to food during the day.
Financial Structure and Management Model of Community Kitchens
The community kitchens of the Bom Prato program are managed by the municipalities, with technical support and co-financing from the Government of Pernambuco, through the Secretary of Social Assistance, Fight Against Hunger and Drug Policies, the SAS.
This arrangement is presented as a way to share responsibilities and keep the units integrated into the local social assistance policy.
Each new community kitchen receives an initial investment of R$ 50,000 for structuring and purchasing equipment, in addition to a monthly transfer of R$ 20,000 for maintenance and operation.
The SAS resources aim to ensure that the Bom Prato program has minimum conditions for stable operation, with inputs, staff, and infrastructure to maintain the supply of daily meals.
Impact of the Bom Prato Program on Food Security in Pernambuco
According to the Executive Secretary for Combating Hunger, Felipe Medeiros, each new unit of the Bom Prato program is treated as an achievement in the state’s food security policy.
Community kitchens have already been implemented in all 12 development regions of Pernambuco, which, according to the government, is already reflected in the reduction of cases of malnutrition recorded in the state territory.
According to data released by the management, the Bom Prato program has already distributed more than 12.8 million meals.
In the official assessment, this significant volume of served plates indicates that community kitchens are consolidating as central equipment in the social protection network, combining food, dignity, and the presence of the public authorities in the most vulnerable neighborhoods and cities.
How do you evaluate the reach of the Bom Prato program in your region: are the community kitchens really reaching the families that need it most in Pernambuco?
