The Works For The Development Of The New Petrobras FPSO Platform To Be Used In The Santos Basin Have Already Begun At The Chinese Shipyard. COSCO Shipping Offshore Is Expecting Great Things From The Construction Project Of The Vessel.

The Chinese shipyard COSCO Shipping Offshore held a ceremony in Qidong to kick off the construction project of the new FPSO platform that will be used by Petrobras in the Santos Basin, the P-82. For this Wednesday, (04/05), the shipbuilding company promises the “largest FPSO project in the world” with the new vessel, which will have a designed storage capacity of 22.5 million barrels.

New Petrobras FPSO Platform Construction Project Initiated By Chinese Shipyard COSCO Shipping Offshore After Ceremony In Qidong

COSCO Shipping Offshore Engineering, the Chinese shipbuilder, held an inauguration ceremony for the construction of a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel in Qidong.

The vessel will be used by Petrobras in the pre-salt area of the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil. The FPSO P-82, as it is called, was described by COSCO Shipping Offshore as “the largest FPSO project in the world”.

With a total length of 360 meters, a beam of 60 meters, a depth of 34.3 meters, and a total weight of over 8,160 tons of hull steel structure, the FPSO P-82 is considered the largest FPSO project ever undertaken.

The FPSO will have a storage capacity of 22.5 million barrels and will connect seven wells equipped with CO2 capture technology and geological storage (CCUS) using divergent anchoring.

According to the Chinese shipyard, the project is the first under a new model between BPA, Sembcorp Marine, and COSCO Shipping Offshore in Qidong.

The platform is expected to go into operation in 2026 and will be the tenth platform to be installed at the Búzios field, where Petrobras is the operator, with a 92.6% stake in the field, having CNOOC and CNODC as partners, each with 3.7%.

Regarding other FPSO units intended to work in the Búzios field in the Santos Basin, SBM Offshore recently completed the project finance of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré with a total value of US$ 1.63 billion, guaranteed by a consortium of 13 international banks.

State-Owned Company Invests In The Búzios Field In The Santos Basin With New FPSO P-82 Project Built By Chinese Company COSCO Shipping Offshore

The Búzios field, located in the Santos Basin off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, is considered one of the largest offshore oil fields in the world.

With reserve estimates exceeding 12 billion barrels of equivalent oil, the field has been the focus of significant investments by Petrobras and foreign companies.

The construction of the FPSO P-82 by COSCO Shipping Offshore Engineering is part of Petrobras’ development plan for the Búzios field.

With these investments, Petrobras aims to increase its oil and gas production capacity in the Santos Basin and establish itself as one of the world’s leading energy companies.

At the same time, the construction of these FPSO units also represents an opportunity for shipbuilding companies.

Thus, the start of the construction project for the new FPSO at the Chinese shipyard COSCO Shipping Offshore marks only the first step of Petrobras towards its future plan.
