With the Chance to Build a Polar Ship at the Ecovix Shipyard, A New Breath of Hope Emerges for the Naval Hub of Rio Grande, Which Will Translate into Many Job Opportunities in the Region

Good news for the shipbuilding industry in Rio Grande do Sul! Ecovix is negotiating with the Chilean ASMAR for the construction of the first Polar ship at its shipyard in the city of Rio Grande. Another excellent piece of news has renewed the hope of professionals in the naval industry, after the sector’s crisis caused by corruption that led to significant layoffs. According to councilman Benito Gonçalves, in an interview with Petronotícias, despite many having left the city, Rio Grande still has a large contingent of specialized labor waiting for the revival of the region’s naval hub. “The city did not empty. Jobs left, but many people stayed here,” he said. The councilman highlighted that Ecovix’s projections indicate that the construction of the polar ship may generate up to 5,000 jobs. “This has made the community very excited. We are very hopeful that this Chilean company can finalize this contract with Ecovix,” he concluded.

The economic crisis in Rio Grande occurred on December 12, 2016, when there were mass layoffs at the Ecovix yard. In 2010, the construction of eight hulls for Petrobras was planned, which meant 20 years of work and many jobs.

The workers were the only ones penalized for everything that happened since Operation Lava Jato, where we had to watch platforms being cut and sold as scrap, in addition to imported parts worth millions of dollars being sold as trash. At the time, only three or four blocks remained for the P-71. The P-72 was practically complete, just needing assembly.

With the good news of the chance to build a polar ship at the Ecovix shipyard, a new breath of hope emerges for the naval hub of Rio Grande, which will translate into investments in security, health, infrastructure, and jobs in the region.

This is a different kind of construction; the new project will help the Brazilian naval sector develop even further, acquiring unprecedented knowledge in Brazil, as it is not an oil platform, but a polar ship. It is a complex vessel that can generate more than 5,000 job openings!

For the ship’s construction, the Ecovix shipyard estimates the creation of 5,000 new direct and indirect job openings. Not including suppliers, indirect labor, and commerce, we can say that a ship like this will comfortably impact 10,000 people.

Rio Grande do Sul does not only have the Ecovix shipyard. There are other shipyards in the region like QGI and, in the neighboring city of São José do Norte, the EBR shipyard. EBR, in fact, built four modules for Modec last year. And now, more recently, they have taken on another four or five modules to build. So, they are starting to hire again.

The shipyard is being cleaned and organized for a possible resumption. There is great anticipation that this Chilean company can finalize this contract with Ecovix.

“As a councilman, working in the political arena, I have been walking alongside to try to facilitate everything we can to open doors for new projects in the cities of Rio Grande and São José do Norte. Thus, we can recover what we have lost: the dignity of having back the jobs for which we qualified”, said Benito Gonçalves.
