The start of the works is scheduled for January 2021, when the Enseada Indústria Naval shipyard in Bahia will be the base for the construction of two container ships by Petrocity Portos, which is currently planning the construction of a large port in São Mateus, in the northern part of the state.

The first of the ships will enter into operation in 2022! The total investment for the construction of the two large vessels will be R$ 617 million, where each ship will cost, according to Resolution 174/2020, a total of 73.443 million US dollars, approximately R$ 308.5 million.

The container ships to be built at the Enseada shipyard in Bahia are vessels of 1,500 feet (75 TEUS), intended for cabotage transport (between national ports) with a capacity of 2,000 tons.

According to José Roberto Barbosa da Silva, president of Petrocity Portos, the completion of the ship construction is expected to occur even before the port works in Urussuquara are finished, and it will operate from the Enseada Shipyard itself.

The construction of the two ships will generate 750 job openings in Maragogipe, Bahia, being the first large contract for the Enseada shipyard since it was hit by a naval crisis due to Operation Lava Jato, which caused many workers to lose their jobs.

It is worth recalling that the Enseada Shipyard initially belonged to a consortium formed by Odebrecht Engenharia Industrial, OAS, and UTC Engenharia. Today, the industry is solely owned by Odebrecht Engenharia, which is also a partner of Petrocity in the construction of the port. It holds the main contract – worth R$ 2.1 billion – when the works begin.

The president of Petrocity stated in an interview with Petronotícias that the contract with the Enseada Shipyard has already been signed by the capixaba company, whose main project is the construction of the Port Center of São Mateus, with an investment of over R$ 3.1 billion. The federal sphere has already cleared the authorizations for the work, as well as the local city hall, but the license from the State Institute of the Environment (IEMA) is still pending.

For the executive, the goal of constructing the two large ships is because “Petrocity will be a major cabotage hub, with an advanced platform 1.8 km from the shore, for large-scale navigation making transshipment for cabotage. Within this vision of the BR do Mar, the company anticipated and has been developing this project since 2018, together with the Enseada Shipyard and an international partner, to implement cabotage transport, which will be possible with this financing for the two ships, which will cost R$ 616 million and will start to be built in January 2021, according to the new forecast.”

“We will not only encourage but also invest in cabotage, because we understand that this is the great solution for cargo mobility in Brazil. The regulatory framework BR do Mar will bring significant gains for cargo producers, especially for the region of influence of Petrocity, the North and Northwest of Espírito Santo, South Bahia, and East Minas, reaching the Steel Valley and Greater Belo Horizonte,” concludes José Roberto Barbosa.
