Wilson Sons Shipyard in Partnership with Dutch Damen Completes Conversion of PSV to SDSV, Vessel Will Be Operated by the Brazilian Company’s Tugboat Division

Wilson Sons and Damen proudly announced on their communication channels that they completed last month the conversion of the platform supply vessel (PSV) into a shallow dive support vessel (SDSV).
The vessel, named Fulmar, belongs to Wilson Sons UltraTug Offshore and will need to change its classification from DP1 to DP2 before being operated by the same company.

The conversion of the PSV by the Brazilian and Dutch groups was undertaken after Wilson Sons UltraTug Offshore won a contract with Petrobras.
The work was carried out at the Wilson Sons Shipyard in Guarujá after Damen conducted a feasibility study of the project, as they were responsible for all engineering, integration, and management at the shipyard for the DP1-DP2 conversion.

It was up to the Wilson Sons shipyard to perform the work, material deliveries, installation, and FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) testing.

Successful Partnership

According to Daniel Pereira, Maintenance Manager of the shipyard, “The project was not without challenges. For example, to have the vessel ready by the contractual deadline with Petrobras, we had only six months to fulfill the entire scope of the project.”

Another point of extreme importance for the success of the venture, according to Pereira, was the perfect integration among the partners, with daily meetings to monitor progress and avoid scope changes that could delay the schedule.

Once the work was completed, the vessel underwent an extensive testing program by Petrobras, whose results were satisfactory and allowed for the vessel to commence operations at the beginning of this month of May.

Currently, Wilson Sons Shipyard, its logistical arm Wilson Sons UltraTug Offshore, and Dutch Damen have in their portfolio the construction of 18 PSVs over the last 12 years.
