The Volkswagen Virtus 170 TSI Stands Out for Its 521-Liter Trunk, but Its 1.0 Turbo Engine with 116 HP Raises the Question: Is the Performance of This 2025 Sedan Sufficient for Its Size?
Understand this popular 2025 sedan in depth. We investigated whether its engine is sufficient, compared its trunk space with rivals, and assessed whether its cost-benefit ratio makes it the right choice for you.
In the competitive compact sedan segment in Brazil, consumers seek a balance between space, efficiency, and performance.
The Volkswagen Virtus 2025, especially in its entry-level 170 TSI version, strongly emphasizes space, offering one of the largest trunks in the category. However, its 1.0 turbo engine raises a debate about its ability to move the medium-sized car that the Virtus boasts with agility.

X-Ray of the Virtus 170 TSI, the 2025 sedan that Invests in Space
The Volkswagen Virtus 170 TSI is equipped with a 1.0 TSI (turbo) three-cylinder engine, delivering 116 HP of power (ethanol) and a torque of 16.8 kgfm.
Its main advantage lies in its dimensions. With a generous wheelbase of 2.65 meters, it offers excellent interior space, especially for rear-seat passengers.
The key asset is its 521-liter trunk, one of the largest in the category. The 170 TSI automatic version starts at a price close to R$ 121,000 and now comes standard with the 10.1-inch VW Play multimedia center and digital instrument panel for the 2025 model.
Is the 1.0 Turbo Engine with 116 HP Enough for the Size of the Virtus?

The main question about this 2025 sedan is whether its 1.0 turbo engine can handle the job. With the lightweight car, the torque available at low revs (1,750 rpm) ensures agility in urban traffic. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h, in about 11 seconds, is adequate for daily use.
The challenge arises when the car is loaded. The payload capacity of the automatic Virtus is 398 kg. If the car carries five adults weighing 75 kg each (totaling 375 kg), only 23 kg remains for luggage. This creates a paradox: a giant trunk that cannot be fully loaded with heavier items if the car is at full capacity.
In these conditions, the performance of the 116 HP engine, already considered “just sufficient” by some, will be even more taxed.
Does the Virtus Really Have the Largest in the Category?
One of the main selling points of the Virtus is its trunk. A comparative analysis, however, shows a competitive landscape:
Fiat Cronos: 525 liters
Volkswagen Virtus: 521 liters
Honda City: 519 liters
Nissan Versa: 482 liters
Hyundai HB20S: 475 liters
Chevrolet Onix Plus: 469 liters
Technically, the Fiat Cronos has the largest trunk, surpassing the Virtus by a narrow margin of 4 liters. In practice, both are leaders and offer exceptional volumetric loading capacity for the category.
Cost-Benefit, the Virtus 170 TSI 2025 vs. Competition
In the price range of the Virtus 170 TSI AT (around R$ 120,000), competition is fierce.
Chevrolet Onix Plus Premier (R$ 125,790): offers a more comprehensive tech package, with blind spot alert and parking assistant, but with a much smaller trunk (469L).
Hyundai HB20S Platinum Safety (R$ 127,990): stands out for its ADAS safety package (autonomous braking, lane assistant), but also with a smaller trunk (475L).
Fiat Cronos Precision 1.3 AT (~R$ 110,000): has a larger trunk and a lower price, but with a considerably less powerful aspirated engine and fewer safety features.
The choice between models will depend on the consumer’s priorities.
Is It Worth Investing in This 2025 Sedan?
The Volkswagen Virtus 170 TSI solidifies itself as a strong option for those who have maximum priority on interior space and trunk volume. Its turbo engine ensures agility for daily use, and the new standard multimedia center adds value.
However, the buyer must be aware of its limitations. Performance when the car is fully loaded may be merely sufficient, and the payload capacity restricts the practical use of the entire trunk volume if the vehicle is carrying five passengers.
It is the 2025 sedan ideal for families that value space and comfort, but not for those seeking sporty performance or a more advanced technological package in the entry-level version.
