In the search for a 2018 midsize sedan, the used car market seems to boil down to one choice: the reliability of the Toyota Corolla or the offers from its competitors. However, the Chevrolet Cruze LT 1.4 Turbo emerges as a strong contender, providing more performance, technology, and a robust safety package for a similar price around R$ 80,000.

But does this advantage on paper hold up in practice? A detailed analysis of engines, features, and maintenance costs reveals that the Cruze is indeed an extremely competitive option. However, the final decision between it and its main rival depends on what the buyer values most: the driving experience or the security of the investment.

How the 1.4 Engine with 153 hp of the Cruze Outperforms the Naturally Aspirated Rival

The big advantage of the Chevrolet Cruze is its mechanical set. The 1.4 Ecotec Turbo engine with direct injection delivers 153 hp and, more importantly, 24.5 kgf.m of torque at just 2,000 rpm. In comparison, the 1.8 naturally aspirated engine of the Corolla from the same era produces 144 hp and 18.6 kgf.m of torque at 4,800 rpm.

This difference of nearly 32% in torque, available at lower revs, translates into significantly superior agility. The Cruze accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds, two seconds quicker than the Corolla. Best of all, it delivers this performance without sacrificing fuel economy. With gasoline, its highway consumption is even slightly better than its rival’s, debunking the notion that every turbo engine is a “gas guzzler.”

The 6 Airbags and Stable Structure of the Cruze LT 2018

When it comes to features, the advantage of the Cruze LT over the entry-level Corolla GLi is clear. It offers standard items such as automatic air conditioning and the start-stop system, which turns off the engine when stopped to save fuel.

The major differentiator, however, is the MyLink 2 multimedia system. With a 7-inch screen and mirroring via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it provides a connectivity experience far superior to the basic sound system of the Corolla at the time. In 2025, being able to use apps like Waze and Spotify on the car’s screen is a necessity, and the Cruze already delivered that.

The Battle Between Cruze Maintenance and Corolla Depreciation

Here the scales tip in favor of the Corolla. The Toyota model is famous for its very low depreciation and high liquidity, making it a safer investment. Its services have a national fixed price, ensuring cost predictability.

The Cruze, like most cars outside the Toyota-Honda axis, has slightly higher depreciation. It also requires attention to a documented chronic problem: water infiltration through the third brake light, which can damage the battery in the trunk. Although repairing the part is not prohibitively expensive (around R$ 800), it is a crucial point of attention when purchasing a 2018 midsize sedan like this.
