Located in the Libra block, over 180 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the Mero Field is a crucial point in the pre-salt area of the Santos Basin. The second phase, known as “Mero 2,” promises to be a game changer in the Brazilian oil sector, reinforcing Brazil’s strategic position in the global energy market.
Innovation and Sustainability in Mero 2
The Mero 2 Phase includes the FPSO Sepetiba, a Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading unit designed to produce 180,000 barrels of oil per day. The FPSO stands out for its commitment to sustainability: it was designed to operate without routine flaring, thereby minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved by reinjecting associated gas back into the reservoir, a practice that underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to responsible environmental practices.
With the completion of Mero 2, the total production capacity of the Mero field will reach 410,000 barrels per day. Additionally, two more phases, Mero 3 and Mero 4, are under construction, each with an additional capacity of 180,000 barrels per day, raising TotalEnergies’ share in the field’s production to over 100,000 barrels per day.

The Mero Unitized Field is operated by Petrobras, in partnership with Shell Brasil, CNPC, CNOOC Limited, and Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A (PPSA), demonstrating a robust and diverse collaboration in the energy sector.
Strengthened Presence of TotalEnergies in Brazil
TotalEnergies, present in Brazil for nearly 50 years, has significantly expanded its operations in the country. The company employs over 3,500 people in various areas, including exploration and production, gas, renewable energy (solar and wind), lubricants, chemicals, and distribution. With a diversified portfolio, TotalEnergies has an average production of approximately 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the country.
Furthermore, TotalEnergies is heavily investing in the renewable energy segment in Brazil. The partnership with Casa dos Ventos, a leader in renewable energy, aims to develop a renewable energy portfolio of 12 GW, demonstrating a strong commitment to clean energy sources.
In the fuel distribution market, TotalEnergies operates approximately 240 fueling stations, as well as several storage facilities for petroleum products and ethanol, consolidating its position as one of the major energy companies operating in Brazil.
