Shell’s Investments in Oil and Natural Gas Production in the Campos Basin Have Been Expanding in Recent Months. The Company Hired a Drilling Rig from Maersk for an Exploratory Campaign Throughout 2023.
Established in the national market as one of the largest companies in the oil and gas sector, Shell continues to expand its presence with multi-million dollar investments in the industry. For this Monday, (10/03), the company is investing US$ 37 million in the hiring of a drilling rig from Maersk that will be used at the Parque das Conchas, located in the Campos Basin. The equipment will operate in 2023 and will contribute to the company’s exploration campaign next year.
Maersk Drilling Rig Will Support Shell’s Exploratory Campaign in the Campos Basin Throughout 2023
Announced a few months ago by Shell, the exploratory campaign for 2023 in the Campos Basin, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, will gain new momentum following the announcement of the company’s new acquisition.
This concerns a drilling rig from Maersk Developer, owned by Maersk Drilling, which was contracted for charter at a cost of US$ 37 million by the multinational oil company.

The German ship Bottsand splits its hull in two halves in the middle of the ocean to swallow spilled oil on the surface, separating the oil from the water inside a 790 cubic meter tank and then closing again. With almost 70 meters in width at the stern and a shape resembling a “giant slice of cheese,” the Ramform Titan tows up to 24 seismic cables to sweep the ocean floor in 3D and reveal oil reserves hidden beneath kilometers of sediment.
The equipment will be used to explore the BC-10 block, also known as Parque das Conchas, for a total period of 90 days, according to the contract signed between the oil and gas companies.
In addition to drilling a new well in the Campos Basin, the Maersk rig will also assist with interventions on the subsea wells in the area.
The forecast for the start of activities is set for March 2023, at the beginning of Shell’s oil and natural gas exploration campaign in the area.
New Contract Strengthens Maersk Drilling’s Presence in the Brazilian Oil and Gas Market for the Next Year
Shell’s new acquisition for exploration in the Campos Basin is a dynamically positioned semi-submersible platform, the DSS-21, capable of operating at depths of up to 3,048 meters.
It is currently operational in Brazil, in partnership with Karoon Energy, but will be even more significant throughout 2023 alongside Shell’s campaign in the domestic market.
Thus, the contract with the oil company will make Maersk Drilling’s presence even more pronounced in Brazilian territory over the coming years.
“We are very pleased to confirm that the Maersk Developer will continue to operate in Brazil after becoming the first Maersk Drilling rig to start operations in the region in many years at the beginning of this year. With this campaign, we will be able to strengthen our robust relationship with Shell, which now extends into the exciting Brazilian market,” commented Morten Kelstrup, Maersk Drilling’s Chief Operating Officer.
