Since former governor André Puccinelli announced on October 8, 2013, that Suzano’s third paper and pulp factory, one of the largest pulp manufacturers in the world, would be built in Ribas do Rio Pardo – MS in 2014, much water has passed under the bridge. The New Suzano Factory in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul
Suzano’s new unit, named “Cerrado Project” in reference to its geographic location in Mato Grosso do Sul, will increase the current pulp production capacity of the company by approximately 20%. Additionally, the factory in Ribas do Rio Pardo will be the most competitive facility of the company.
Walter Schalka, CEO of Suzano, states that this new factory will represent an important advancement in the company’s long-term strategy. He also emphasizes that the new unit in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul will make a significant contribution to income generation and job creation for the region, as well as in carbon capture capacity, resulting from the expansion of the forest base.
The realization of the project, which will have the capacity to produce 2.3 million tons of eucalyptus pulp annually, will result in the largest single-line pulp factory of Suzano in the world, but it still depends on preconditions, such as compliance with the parameters established in Suzano’s Financial Policy and negotiations with suppliers. The Cerrado Project will primarily be funded by the company’s cash generation, although it can be supplemented with financing as long as the conditions are attractive in terms of cost and terms.
Job and Income Generation with the New Factory in Mato Grosso do Sul
During the construction of Suzano’s new pulp factory in Ribas do Rio Pardo, around 10,000 direct jobs are expected to be created at the peak of construction, along with thousands of indirect jobs throughout the Mato Grosso do Sul region. Once completed, the new factory may generate 3,000 direct jobs among its own employees and third parties.
Reinaldo Azambuja, the governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, states that the government has prepared the state to diversify its economy and transform it into a new hub of business opportunities and investments. The governor says that he has invested in infrastructure, thereby ensuring competitiveness for commodities. In addition to the state tax incentive program, the state government has created thousands of jobs and attracted more industries, maintaining a steady pace of economic growth throughout the state.
According to Azambuja, Suzano’s announcement regarding the construction of the plant in Ribas do Rio Pardo demonstrates that the company is on the right track, transforming Mato Grosso do Sul into a state of opportunities for all, with sustainability and quality of life for the population.
