The data comes from a survey conducted by Softex, a social organization focused on promoting the IT sector that is part of the TechDev Paraná Project, an initiative that brings together business and public entities to develop IT activities. Among them are the Paraná regional branch of the Brazilian Association of Information Technology Companies (Assespro-PR), the Government of the State of Paraná, and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

To try to solve the problem, the project is currently conducting two surveys to identify bottlenecks and demands in human resources in the sector.

Survey Aims to Map Existing Job Openings and Investigate Labor Shortage in the IT Sector

One survey aims to map existing vacancies in the area and check where the labor shortage occurs frequently. It targets companies that respond to a form with questions related to size, sector of activity, and business profile, as well as about recruitment methods, internships, employee retention, and other issues related to human resource management.

In turn, the second survey aims to investigate necessary competencies for hard skills and soft skills. The former refers to a set of professional skills considered quantifiable, that is, measurable in some way. For example, certifications obtained by professionals, their academic and supplementary qualifications, among other characteristics. The term soft skills relates to more subjective competencies, such as creativity, emotional intelligence, and analytical thinking.

According to Lucas Ribeiro, the president of Assespro-PR, the diagnosis will allow both entrepreneurs and public managers to establish more effective actions for the development of the innovation sector. The director highlights Paraná’s leadership in this scenario of technological potential. Therefore, he emphasizes the importance of companies participating in the two ongoing surveys within TechDev Paraná.

Paraná is the Second State in IT Revenue

“According to the Acate Tech Report 2020, Paraná is the second state in IT revenue – in the last period, it recorded growth of 25.4%. It is also the second state in the number of new professionals trained and the fourth in total payroll for economic activities in Brazil,” states Ribeiro, who is also the CEO of ROIT BANK – an accountech and fintech in Paraná. Activities in agriculture and livestock, food industry, and smart grid (automated management of the electrical sector) are among the highlights in job generation in IT in Paraná, the director points out.

Tackling the shortage of qualified labor is essential for Brazil not to miss the opportunity to become a reference in the global IT market, warns Ribeiro. Currently, the country is the 10th largest in the world and the leader in Latin America, accounting for 40% of this regional market, according to the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES).

The TechDev Paraná was launched last November. Ribeiro emphasizes the synergy of the stakeholders involved: “The goal is to promote the technology and innovation ecosystem in Paraná by connecting companies, universities, science and technology institutions, and the public sector,” underscores the president of Assespro-PR.
