Rare Sedan in Brazil, the Mercedes Benz 300 SE of Faustão Combined 193 hp Power, Premium Comfort and Only Four Imported Units.

Few cars have marked the history of luxury in Brazil as much as the Mercedes Benz 300 SE, and it was in the hands of Fausto Silva. In the early 1990s, when importing vehicles became possible again, only four units arrived in the country. Besides Faustão, three other giants of Brazilian music had access to the exclusive model: Chitãozinho, Xororó, and Roberto Carlos.

In 1991, the government of Fernando Collor reopened the Brazilian market for vehicle imports. Finding brands like BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz on the streets was still a rare occurrence.

In this scenario, a batch of only four Mercedes-Benz 300 SE 1991/1992 arrived in Brazil, destined for four icons of music and television: Fausto Silva, Roberto Carlos, and the sertanejo duo Chitãozinho and Xororó. Identical, the cars were among the most luxurious available, costing around US$ 90,000 each, an amount that nearly doubled with the import taxes of the time.

The Story of the Four Mercedes

The dealer Reginaldo Gonçalves, known as Reginaldo de Campinas, tells this story in detail. Today, he owns the Mercedes that belonged to Xororó, identified by the plates CXO-0001. According to him, Roberto Carlos still keeps his unit, with plates DRC-2222, while Faustão sold his model and Chitãozinho traded his for cattle. Reginaldo acquired the black sedan from Xororó in 1997 for US$ 70,000, still a very high amount by Brazilian standards at the time.

A native of Campinas, the city where the sertanejo duo also lives, Reginaldo met Chitãozinho and Xororó as a child in 1983. Over time, the proximity turned into friendship. In December 1991, he had the opportunity to drive Xororó’s 300 SE and, years later, bought the car directly from the singer.

The Regret and the Reunion

Despite the achievement, Reginaldo ended up selling the car three years after the purchase. A decade later, regret hit him and he started the search to find the vehicle that had marked his youth. He located the ad in Arujá (SP), but found the price too high. In 2011, the owner re-advertised the Mercedes, and this time the deal was closed. Since then, Reginaldo has kept the 300 SE, now with just over 70,000 km on the clock.

The automobile is not used on a daily basis and is currently undergoing repairs on the automatic transmission, which showed failures after being parked for long periods. For Reginaldo, it is a true cherished possession that he does not intend to sell. In 2012, the sertanejo duo even signed the mandatory vehicle document, which he has kept with care until today.

The Mercedes 300 SE 1992

Even after almost three decades, the Mercedes 300 SE still impresses. From the W140 generation, the model rivals the current S-Class in sophistication. It featured items that were revolutionary at the time: automatic door closure, double-glazed windows for better acoustic insulation, dual-zone air conditioning, and dual airbags. Another highlight was the analog parking assistant, with retractable antennas that emerged when reversing.

The dimensions reinforced its imposing stature: 5.11 meters in length, 1.88 m in width, and a 3.04 m wheelbase. The trunk offered a capacity of 442 liters. Under the hood, a 2.8 inline six-cylinder engine delivered 193 hp of power and 27.5 kgfm of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

A Link Between Cars and Music

The connection between Reginaldo and the Mercedes goes beyond ownership. The vehicle symbolizes his long-standing friendship with Chitãozinho and Xororó, built from meetings at local radio stations to international trips with the duo in the 1990s. This bond was immortalized when the singers signed the car’s document.

Today, Reginaldo’s dream is to gather all four original units — including Roberto Carlos’s, who still keeps his — and capture a historic photo of the cars with their former owners. A memory that would mark not only his journey but also a unique chapter in Brazilian automotive and musical culture.
