José, a 111-Year-Old Man in Antônio, Needs to Prove He’s Alive After Systems Indicated Death and Blocked His Retirement; Family Faces Trips to the Bank, Tax Office, Notary, and Social Security.
An elderly person, a proof of life, and the retirement benefits from Social Security that disappeared! When age is already a challenge in itself, bureaucracy turns into almost a marathon. A 111-year-old man is being forced to undergo a real proof of life to regain a basic right: his retirement.
A resident of Santo Antônio de Leverger, he needs to travel back and forth to Cuiabá because, in official records, he is listed as deceased, even though he is right there, standing in front of attendants and counters.
Unable to read, coming from a humble background and relying on a minimum wage, he feels the burden of this interruption in his pocket and in his daily life.

Tourists were poisoned on Everest in a million-dollar fraud scheme involving helicopters that diverted over $19 million and shocked international authorities.
And the family, which has always lived on this money to cover monthly expenses, now also has to spend to try to unlock the payment.
What Changed Suddenly: February Arrived and the Money Didn’t Come
The one who always kept a close watch was the daughter, Leidiane da Silva Lima. She explains that until January the payments were normal. But February became the month of shock: no funds were released.
And that’s when the pilgrimage began: first to the bank, then to the Tax Office, then to the notary… and always with the father in tow, because the guidance was the same: “you have to bring the account holder.”
The daughter describes the shock of hearing that her father “had already died,” even with him present. She recounts:
“We went two or three times to the bank and nothing. I took dad and brought him to the bank, and they said we had to go to the Tax Office. ‘We took dad, got a car, took him to the Tax Office in Cuiabá, and when I get there, they sent me to look for the notary. We went there and where is the death certificate? There isn’t one, but it shows him as deceased. At the bank they even told me ‘Your father is already deceased,’ but I said ‘How is my father deceased if he is right in front of you now?’” Leidiane recalls.
Cancelled CPF and Blocked Benefits: When the System Decides for You
The situation became even more dire when documentary confirmation showed that the problem was not just “at the bank.” A document from the Tax Office indicated that his CPF status was marked as cancelled. This led to a cascading consequence: his retirement was put on hold, and his withdrawal card was cancelled.
For a family that needs to organize transport for a centenarian, this becomes a huge extra cost. They say each trip between Santo Antônio de Leverger and Cuiabá can reach R$ 400, money that is sorely missed at home.
The Payment Came Back… But the Risk Remains at Social Security
The amount that was stuck in February was released the following month, but the problem didn’t end there. The family received information that, also at Social Security, the record indicates he is dead.
And the warning is clear: if this is not corrected soon, everything may be blocked again next month. The daughter summarizes the urgency:
“We have to go to Social Security to show that he is alive to do everything again. If not, next month he won’t be able to withdraw.”
Proof of Life at Social Security Changed, Making Cases Like This Even More Delicate
In recent years, the proof of life process has undergone significant changes. Social Security has stated that, since 2023, verification mainly occurs through data cross-referencing, reducing the need for beneficiaries to leave home.
On the official portal, the Institute explains that mandatory visits to the bank or Social Security are no longer the rule, as the agency tries to confirm the beneficiary’s status through government databases.
More than that: the president of Social Security, Alessandro Stefanutto, stated on the official website:
“The duty to prove that beneficiaries are alive is the responsibility of Social Security, which has been cross-referencing data with other government databases…”
In practice, when there is inconsistency, such as a death record without documentary support, the system can generate blocks, withholdings, and endless visits to different agencies. And even with a “more digital” model, it is the citizen who pays the price, especially when it’s an elderly person with limited mobility.
Attention: Social Security Warns About Scams Involving Proof of Life
Another important point, especially when the term proof of life comes up, is the risk of scams.
Social Security itself emphasizes that it does not make direct contact requesting proof of life via WhatsApp, SMS, email, or calls, nor sends “officials” to collect documents at the policyholder’s home. The warning has been documented in an official notice from the Institute.
This does not resolve the plight of the 111-year-old man, but it helps to prevent a bureaucratic crisis from also leading to financial loss due to fraud.
Official Pathways for Regularization: CPF and Service Without Shortcuts
When the issue involves CPF and registration status, it is common for citizens to feel lost between banks, notaries, and public agencies.
The Tax Office maintains an official page for regularization (when applicable) in its digital service environment, which helps avoid reliance on “intermediaries.”
To understand in a straightforward way what the terms “suspended,” “cancelled,” and “deceased account holder” mean, there are also updated explanatory guides, such as the one from Serasa, which detail impacts and consultation pathways.
In the case of this elderly person, the reported scenario involves being “listed as deceased” in official databases — and this requires registration correction so that the retirement does not get blocked again and to ensure the record at Social Security is adjusted.
When the Family Becomes Drivers, Companions, and “Walking Documents”
In the end, what emerges is a harsh reality: the family has to struggle where the system ought to be simple.
Between organizing the car, travel expenses, waiting in line, and exchanging information between institutions, time and money go away, precisely when the elderly man should be at peace.
And the most symbolic aspect is this: the person has to move to prove that he exists.
