In the midst of a challenging economic scenario, news emerges as a relief for millions of Brazilians: starting this Thursday, March 6, 2025, workers who opted for the anniversary withdrawal from the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS) and were dismissed without cause between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2025, will be able to access retained amounts of up to R$ 3 thousand.

This provisional measure, announced by the federal government, aims to inject approximately R$ 12 billion into the economy, benefiting around 12.2 million workers.

Who Is Eligible for the FGTS Withdrawal?

To be eligible for the withdrawal, the worker must:

  • Have opted for the anniversary withdrawal option of FGTS.
  • Have been dismissed without cause during the period between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2025.
  • Have a balance available in the FGTS account related to the terminated employment.

How to Check the FGTS Balance?

Workers can check the available balance in their FGTS accounts through the following options:

FGTS App (available for Android and iOS):

  1. Download and install the official FGTS app from your smartphone’s app store.
  2. Open the app and log in using your CPF and password. If you don’t have an account yet, select the “Register” option and follow the provided instructions.
  3. On the home screen, you will be able to view the balance of your FGTS-linked accounts. To see specific details for each account, select the desired company.
  4. To save or share the statement, use the “Generate PDF Statement” option available in the app.

Caixa Econômica Federal Website:

  1. Access the official website of Caixa Econômica Federal.
  2. Navigate to the FGTS section and select the “FGTS Statement” option.
  3. Provide your personal information, such as CPF and NIS/PIS, and the registered password. If you do not have a password, you will need to register.
  4. After logging in, you can check the balance and the complete statement of your FGTS-linked accounts.

In-Person Service:

If preferred, the worker can go to a Caixa Econômica Federal branch with an identification document with a photo and a work card to obtain information about the FGTS balance.

How Will the Payment Be Made?

The payment process for FGTS amounts will follow different modalities, depending on each worker’s situation:

Automatic Payment:

Workers who registered a bank account in the FGTS app will receive the credit automatically to that account starting from March 6, 2025, for amounts up to R$ 3 thousand. There will be no need to go to a branch to make the withdrawal.

In-Person Withdrawal:

For those who did not provide a bank account in the app, the withdrawal can be made in the following ways:

  • Lottery Houses and ATMs: Using the Citizen Card and the respective password.
  • Caixa Econômica Federal Branches: Presenting an official identification document with a photo and the work card.

Payment Schedule

The release of funds will follow a specific schedule, divided into two main phases:

First Installment (Up to R$ 3 Thousand):

  • March 6, 2025: Born between January and April who registered a bank account in the FGTS app.
  • March 7, 2025: Born between May and August.
  • March 10, 2025: Born between September and December.

  3. On the home screen, you will see information about the companies where you worked.

What Is the FGTS Anniversary Withdrawal?

The Anniversary Withdrawal is a modality that allows the worker to withdraw annually a portion of the FGTS balance in the month of their birthday.

This option offers greater flexibility in accessing resources, but it involves some restrictions, especially in cases of dismissal without cause.

Advantages of the Anniversary Withdrawal:

  • **Annual access to an amount of FGTS**, allowing the worker to use part of the resources without the need for dismissal.
  • Financial planning possibility, as the withdrawal occurs every year in the beneficiary’s birthday month.
  • An alternative for those who wish to use the money for emergencies or personal investments.
  • Disadvantages of the Anniversary Withdrawal:
  • Those who choose this modality lose the right to the full FGTS withdrawal in case of dismissal without cause, being able to withdraw only the termination penalty of 40%.
  • Joining the anniversary withdrawal is not mandatory, but once done, the worker can only opt out and return to the traditional rule after 25 months.

How to Opt for or Cancel the Anniversary Withdrawal

Should the worker wish to join or cancel the anniversary withdrawal, it can be done through the FGTS app, Caixa’s website, or directly at a bank branch.

Step-by-Step to Join the Anniversary Withdrawal:

  1. Access the FGTS app and log in.
  2. Select the “Anniversary Withdrawal” option in the main menu.
  3. Read the terms carefully and confirm the membership.
  4. Choose a bank account to receive the funds or opt for an in-person withdrawal.

Step-by-Step to Cancel the Anniversary Withdrawal:

  1. Log into the FGTS app or Caixa’s website.
  2. Go to “Settings” and then “Withdrawal Modality.”
  3. Select “Termination Withdrawal” to return to the traditional model.
  4. Wait the 25-month period for the change to take effect.

How Does the Anticipation of the Anniversary Withdrawal Work?

In addition to opting for the anniversary withdrawal, the worker can anticipate the amounts of future installments through a loan offered by banks, such as Caixa Econômica Federal and other authorized financial institutions. This anticipation works like a loan where the FGTS balance serves as collateral.

Main Features of the Anticipation of the Anniversary Withdrawal:

  • The worker can anticipate up to three years of withdrawals.
  • The minimum anticipation amount is R$ 500 per year.
  • Interest rates are usually lower than those for traditional personal loans.
  • The debt repayment occurs automatically with the deduction of the anniversary withdrawal amounts in the following years.

Can FGTS Be Used to Purchase a Home?

Yes, FGTS can be used to purchase a home, provided the worker meets some specific requirements. This possibility is available for financing made through the Housing Finance System (SFH) and can be used for three main purposes:

  1. Acquisition of residential property (purchase of a house or apartment).
  2. Amortization or liquidation of the outstanding balance of housing financing.
  3. Payment of part of the housing financing installments (limited to up to 12 consecutive installments).

Requirements to Use FGTS for Home Purchase:

  • Have three years or more of work under the FGTS regime, consecutive or not.
  • Not own another residential property in the municipality where you wish to buy.
  • The property must be located in an urban area and intended for personal housing.
  • The property value must not exceed the limits established by SFH.

How to Request the Use of FGTS for Home Purchase?

  1. Contact the bank responsible for the financing and request the use of FGTS.
  2. Present the required documents, such as a work card, proof of residence, and FGTS statement.
  3. The bank will evaluate the documentation and release the funds, if the worker meets the requirements.

Other Allowed Uses of FGTS

In addition to withdrawal in case of dismissal without cause and use for home purchase, FGTS can also be withdrawn in some specific situations:

  • Retirement: The worker who retires has the right to withdraw the entire accumulated FGTS balance.
  • Serious Illnesses: Individuals with serious illnesses, such as cancer and HIV, can request the withdrawal of FGTS.
  • Worker’s Death: In the event of death, dependents or heirs can withdraw the FGTS of the deceased holder.
  • Natural Disasters: If there is a natural disaster that compromises the worker’s housing, they can request an emergency withdrawal of FGTS.

Tips for Using FGTS Money Wisely

Many workers who receive FGTS payments end up spending without planning, which can compromise their financial stability. Here are some tips to use this money more strategically:

  1. Pay off debts – If you have financial obligations, using FGTS to settle debts can be an excellent way to reduce interest and ease your budget.
  2. Create an emergency fund – Building a reserve for unforeseen expenses can ensure more financial security.
  3. Invest in professional training – Courses and specializations can increase your opportunities in the job market.
  4. Invest in financial assets – Investments like CDBs, Treasury Direct, and investment funds can yield more than savings.
  5. Make improvements to your home – If you already have a property, FGTS can be used for renovations and increasing property value.

How to Ensure Your FGTS Withdrawal Without Headaches?

The withdrawal of FGTS can be an excellent opportunity to balance finances or invest in improvements in quality of life. However, it is essential for workers to stay attentive to the rules, deadlines, and available withdrawal modalities.

If you meet the criteria for the withdrawal of up to R$ 3 thousand released by the government, check your balance as soon as possible and choose the best way to receive it.
