The history of Fiat in Brazil officially began on July 9, 1976. That year, the Betim factory was inaugurated, the company’s first unit outside Italy.
The first model produced was the Fiat 147, a compact hatch that introduced several innovations to the national market. The industrial complex in Minas Gerais later became one of the main automotive hubs in Latin America.
Since then, Betim has accumulated more than 4 million vehicles exported to 37 countries. The site also houses the largest powertrain production center in the region.
Timeline Shows Industrial Evolution of Fiat in Brazil Since the 147
Fiat’s trajectory in Brazil includes several milestones throughout the decades. In 1979, the 147 running on ethanol was presented as the world’s first production car manufactured with this fuel.
In the following years, derivatives of the model appeared, including sedans, station wagons, vans, and pickups. In 1984, the company launched the Fiat Uno with the concept “small on the outside and big on the inside.”
The lineup evolved with the Prêmio, Elba, and Fiorino starting in 1985. In 1990, the Uno Mille became one of the country’s most popular cars.
In the 1990s, models such as Tempra, Tipo, Palio, and Marea were also introduced. The Palio family gave rise to vehicles like Palio Weekend, Siena, and Strada.
From the 2000s onwards, the portfolio expanded with Doblò, Ducato, Stilo, Idea, Punto, and Linea. In the following decade, models such as Mobi, Argo, Pulse, Fastback, and the new generation of Strada arrived.
In recent years, the brand also presented the Strada Turbo in 2023 and mild hybrid versions of Pulse and Fastback in 2024. Now, upon completing 50 years of production, Fiat in Brazil begins a new industrial cycle that connects the legacy of the 147 to future global platforms and projects by Stellantis.
