The Carrefour Group Announces The Closure Of Its Operations In Ceará, Minas Gerais, Bahia And RS Promoting A Mega Clearance Sale That Will Last Until January. The Company Plans To Close Some Of Its Units And Convert Others Into Atacadão Stores.
On last Sunday (24), the Carrefour units located in Maraponga and in the Fátima neighborhood in Fortaleza experienced exceptionally intense activity. This increase in customer traffic was driven by the mega clearance sale and stock reduction promoted by the company. This event occurs in a significant context: the two units are scheduled to be converted into Atacadão stores, marking an important step in the company’s restructuring strategy, which includes the exit of the Carrefour brand from Ceará by the year 2024. The goal is to get rid of unprofitable stores and convert others into different formats.
Carrefour Will Close Operations And Focus On The Sam’s Club Brand
The Carrefour brand will leave Ceará in 2024, when it will begin to focus on the Sam’s Club brand. The conversions are expected to take place at the end of January next year. As Carrefour will close its stores, the company is preparing the promotional operation “Clearance Sale Stock Liquidation”, meaning a kind of mega clearance sale.
Among the products included in the promotion are household items such as plastic containers and birthday candles, as well as food items like balsamic vinegar, canned sardines, and cake sprinkles. According to the company, four stores will be impacted. Until now, employees from one of the units have highlighted that they have not been notified if they will be dismissed or reassigned to other stores of the Carrefour Group.

It is worth noting that the supermarket on Avenida Luciano Carneiro, in the Fátima neighborhood, already displays signage for mega clearance promotions. Discounts of up to 50% are being offered in the home, clothing, hygiene product, and food sectors.
The unit on Avenida Godofredo Maciel, in Maraponga, as Carrefour is set to close, is offering promotions across all sectors, with significant discounts on toys, tires, and appliances. A 50-inch television, for example, has had its price reduced from R$ 3,099.00 to R$ 2,399. According to an employee, the supermarket will hold a mega clearance sale until the end of January.
According to information from the newspaper Valor, five out of six units located in Bahia are expected to close, with one to be converted into Atacadão. The idea is to exit the hypermarket segment in the state and in Ceará as well. In Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais, the company plans to maintain the format but will close stores by January 31.
Employees Are Anxious About The Closure Of Activities
The branch on Avenida Bezerra de Menezes, in the Farias Brito neighborhood, is also holding a clearance sale with discounts of up to 70%. This unit will be the only one that Carrefour will close and will not be converted into any other brand, according to information released to the media.
The unit on Avenida Washington Soares, also in the Capital, will be transformed into a Sam’s Club, which, like Atacadão, is part of the Carrefour Group. The conversions and the closure of the Bezerra de Menezes unit are expected to be carried out at the end of January next year.
The news that Carrefour will close operations in Ceará has left employees anxious. At the Maraponga and Fátima neighborhood units, unnamed employees have not yet been informed about transfers. The employees have also expressed concern about the period during which Carrefour will close the establishments to adapt the structure for the Atacadão model.
Employees Speak Out About The Closure
According to a Carrefour Fátima employee, the unit will undergo renovations for 4 months, and the facilities located in the basement, such as the beauty salon and restaurant, must be removed from the location.
When questioned by the media, the Carrefour Group did not respond regarding the possible layoffs or reassignment of employees. According to the company in a statement released on November 28 of this year, Carrefour Brasil is in the process of reviewing its portfolio in order to optimize the network of stores in its ecosystem.
Thus, some stores will be transformed into other formats and some specific closures are also planned. Carrefour reaffirms the network’s commitment to the state of Ceará, an area of extreme importance for its business, and that it will continue to have the presence of Carrefour Brasil Group.
