On Friday, January 24, 2025, a flight from Alexandria, Virginia, lands at Belo Horizonte International Airport, bringing 88 Brazilians deported from the United States.

The “American Dream,” which for so long fueled the hopes and life plans of thousands of Brazilians, took on dramatic contours in early 2025.

With Donald Trump’s inauguration, US immigration policy underwent a radical shift, directly impacting thousands of Brazilians.

Many faced forced deportation, especially those who could not regularize their immigration status in time.

The changes brought uncertainties and ruptures for entire families, who now need to restart their lives in Brazil after the difficult experience of compulsory return.

Today, Belo Horizonte is the stage for a scene that illustrates how relations between the two countries are being impacted.

On the night of this Friday (24), at 8 PM, a flight from Alexandria, Virginia, United States, is scheduled to land at Belo Horizonte International Airport in Confins (MG).

On board are 88 Brazilians deported by the US government, one of the first reflections of Trump’s new administration, which reaffirmed its stance against illegal immigration.

This is the second deportation flight this year; the first occurred on January 10, before the inauguration of the Republican president.

The Behind-the-Scenes of the Flight

The aircraft used for this operation has a capacity for 180 passengers, but carries only the deportees and a security team contracted by the US government.

According to information from CNN Brasil, these security personnel are responsible for maintaining order during the journey, accompanied by US immigration officials who oversee the process.

Upon arrival on Brazilian soil, the deportees will undergo a screening conducted by the Federal Police. The goal is to check if any of them have pending issues with Brazilian justice.

If there are no irregularities, they will be released to continue their journey. However, those with pending legal issues will remain detained.

Strict Immigration Policies

Donald Trump wasted no time in implementing significant changes to his immigration directives.

One of the most controversial measures was the signing of an executive order suspending the entry of illegal immigrants across the southern border of the United States with Mexico.

The administration also resumed the use of military flights for mass deportations, like the one occurring today.

According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, these actions are part of a broader strategy to “ensure national security and restore order.”

In a post made on X (formerly Twitter), Leavitt shared images of shackled immigrants being boarded onto a military plane, without detailing the nationalities of the deportees.

This initiative reinforces the tightening of immigration policy, one of the pillars of Trump’s campaign.

Impact on Brazilians in the US

For Brazilians residing in the United States, especially those in irregular situations, the atmosphere is one of apprehension.

Immigration experts recommend that immigrants seek legal guidance to regularize their status or plan alternatives.

Many of these Brazilians left in search of better life opportunities but now face the reality of a less tolerant immigration system.

Data from immigrant support organizations indicate that the Brazilian community in the US is significant, totaling about 1.4 million people, according to Itamaraty.

This population is mainly concentrated in states like Florida, which is home to over 400,000 Brazilians, Massachusetts, with around 350,000, and California.

These numbers reflect the pursuit of better living conditions but also illustrate the impact of strict immigration policies on this community.

The deportations represent a heavy blow for families that invested their savings and hopes in building a new life.

International Reactions and Controversies

The measures adopted by the US government have generated reactions worldwide.

Coalitions of states within the US are challenging the constitutionality of some of Trump’s executive orders, such as the one that seeks to suspend citizenship rights for children of illegal immigrants.

The topic promises to be the subject of intense legal disputes in the coming months.

Meanwhile, on the international stage, human rights organizations criticize the conditions under which immigrants are treated during deportation processes.

The images shared by the White House, featuring shackled immigrants, were widely criticized by activists.

The director of Human Rights Watch, Sarah Jones, stated that these practices “violate human dignity and perpetuate an unnecessary punitive approach against people in vulnerable situations.”

Additionally, representatives of the Immigrant Rights Coalition emphasized that the images reinforce stigmas and ignore the emotional impact of these actions on affected families.

The Political Context and Perspectives

Donald Trump’s presidency represents a continuation of hardline immigration policies that marked his first term.

By reclaiming power, he seeks to consolidate his vision of “America for Americans,” placing immigration at the center of his agenda.

For the Brazil, these measures raise important reflections on the situation of immigrants and the impacts of international policies on their territory.

The arrival of deported Brazilians on flights organized by the US government is a clear sign of how bilateral relations are being shaped by the actions of the Trump administration.

And Now?

With the intensification of immigration policies, it remains to be seen how Brazilians in the United States will cope with this new scenario and how Brazil will prepare to welcome those returning to the country.

The story of each of these deportees reflects not only the pursuit of a better life but also the difficulties of adapting to new political and social realities.

I believe the treatment was excessive, with the hand cuffinf etc. That said, there is nothing new or shocking about deportations, especially the numbers. The bluesheet media will do everything in its power to cast negative aspersions on the U.S. upholding the law.The reason being , they despise Donald Trump for blowing their cover and exposing their anti West agenda. They are out to bring down what`s left of the entire Wests middle class. Masters and slaves is their ultimate goal.

Se estão ilegalmente então não tem o que reclamar. Sabiam dos riscos. Portanto nenhum país tem a obrigação de aceitar pessoas ilegalmente
