The increase in oil prices opened high also on the last Monday (16), above US$ 44.50 per barrel (London), which may counterbalance the adjustment in ethanol prices in Brazil.

The cane and corn fuel increased at the pump by 0.66% (R$ 3.071/liter) during the same period, according to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). And gasoline rose by 0.55% (R$ 4.368/l).

According to Cepea/Esalq, with gasoline more expensive since the 12th at refineries, the plants and distilleries more than doubled the loss from the week of November 2 to 6, from 0.15%. From 9 to 13, ethanol expanded by 0.39%.

Since the gasoline adjustment by Petrobras was on the 12th, the pass-through has not yet been fully integrated by retail and even by distributors. However, new increases in ethanol prices at the pump are also expected, following the pass-through that distributors must provide.

Diesel Prices at Brazil’s Pumps Rise in the First Half of the Month, Says Ticket Log

The average diesel price at fuel stations in Brazil rose by 0.8% in the first half of November compared to the closing price in October, but remained below the levels seen in the same period last year.

According to the Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL), the average price of a liter of diesel at the pumps reached R$ 3.713 in the first fifteen days of the month. Compared to last year, the decline is 5.5%.

Last week, Petrobras raised diesel prices by 5% at its refineries, in the first adjustment of November – after a cut in the fuel price last month.

The pass-through of the adjustments to final consumers at the pumps, however, depends on several factors, including distribution and resale margins, taxes, and mandatory addition of anhydrous ethanol.

Brazil is going through a period of recovery in fuel consumption, following the easing of restrictive measures imposed during the coronavirus pandemic coronavirus. BR Distribuidora, the largest fuel distributor in the country, said last week it sees better sales volumes of ethanol, gasoline, and diesel in the fourth quarter.
