Monitoring and periodic preventive maintenance allow early detection of possible failures in system operation
The use of solar energy as a clean alternative energy source is an increasingly present reality throughout the world, whether in the residential, industrial, commercial or rural segments. In Brazil, solar participation is growing at a rapid pace, which has placed the country in 6th place worldwide with the highest generation of photovoltaic energy, according to Absolar (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy).
However, what many of these users, or even those who are interested in purchasing this solar equipment, may not be aware of is that there are some important questions to ensure these solar equipment operate at peak performance and efficiency, which will directly influence one of the crucial points for those who choose the photovoltaic system – savings on their energy bills.
Choosing Equipment for Maximum Performance
The first tip is for those who are evaluating the possibility of installing a photovoltaic system. The engineer Marcelo Niendicker advises that choosing the right equipment directly influences the efficiency and performance of the system. “For example, low quality modules contribute to low energy generation and may present premature operational failures”, explains Marcelo. An evolution of photovoltaic energy, which is beginning to arrive in Brazil, is battery storage. For it to work, it must be used with a hybrid inverter. In this case, there is still the possibility of storage even without solar panels, which makes it possible to install the system in apartments, for example.

However, the engineer warns that it is also necessary to pay attention to the performance of the batteries. “Reliability and durability can be very different according to different suppliers, which can leave the user stranded when they need the batteries most, normally during supply failures from dealerships. Therefore, if not chosen correctly, both points, modules and batteries, can generate great frustration for users of hybrid systems”, he advises.
Importance of Efficiency and Maintenance
In this sense, Marcelo reinforces that it is very important to choose equipment with high efficiency, especially when talking about 'Euro' efficiency, European Efficiency (EU). EU Efficiency is a weighted average of efficiencies, calculated from the annual power distribution found in Europe's climate. The scale goes from 0 to 100% and the weighting factor that has the greatest weight is at 50% loading, as this is the most common in Europe.
“SolaX Power inverters, for example, have Euro efficiency above 97%, therefore delivering more energy at the end of each day of operation”, explains Marcelo, highlighting the equipment from the multinational SolaX Power, a company recently arrived in Brazil, which placed the first hybrid inverter on the Asian market and brought this expertise in storage solar for Brazilian consumers, with the possibility of self-production of clean energy and energy independence.
Installation and Post-Installation Care
Has a decision been made as to which equipment will be purchased? So you need to choose the installation location appropriately. “The location, orientation and inclination of the modules greatly affect the performance of any solar plant, as it must be free from obstacles that cause shading. Therefore, the orientation and inclination must be adjusted according to the project.”
And what precautions should be taken after installation and with the equipment already in operation? The engineer advises that monitoring is essential to detect anomalies and operational failures, which can be a simple activation of a protection device to failure in the storage system or photovoltaic modules.
And, combined with this monitoring, preventive maintenance is also important. “Normally, cleaning is carried out mainly on the photovoltaic modules and visual inspection of the entire system in order to identify the general integrity of the system, with special attention to the sectioning devices (which connect and disconnect the system) and protection devices”. And he adds: “It is important to highlight that the frequency and maintenance plan must always be evaluated by the company responsible for the installation, but normally preventive maintenance must be carried out every six months”.
SolaX Power Global Contribution
Furthermore, there is the possibility of updating the software of various components of the system, including inverters and batteries, “but, in general, it is not necessary to update the system frequently, because they are designed for a long useful life”.
It is important to highlight that solar integrators are professionals and are essential in the solar energy chain, as they are responsible for assisting customers with information and installation of a photovoltaic system, including all these points of attention, from choosing equipment to precautions to be observed during use. To assist in this process, these professionals maintain contact with distributors to offer equipment and the best solutions. Data from Greener shows that Brazil has 26.150 active photovoltaic integrators.
