After Detecting Cracks in the FPSO, Modec Will Perform Works to Reinforce the Hull at the Jurong Shipyard Before Taking It for Scrapping in Turkey

As Click Petróleo e Gás reported in August of this year, Modec, the owner of the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, informed Petrobras that, after inspecting the external tanks, cracks were identified in the vessel’s hull, which is anchored in the Espadarte field, in the Campos Basin, 130 km off the Brazilian coast.

Since then, actions have been taken to comply with the authorities’ decision for the FPSO to be removed from Brazilian waters by February 1, 2020.

Modec contracted two tugboats from Boskalis, the Boka Manta and Boka Sherpa, to tow the FPSO to the Jurong shipyard in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, where it will undergo structural repairs and subsequently proceed to scrapping in Turkey.

The platform risked sinking after cracks in its hull caused an oil leak in the Campos basin, where the FPSO is undergoing a demobilization process, having ended its production cycle in July 2018.

Mitigating Actions

As Modec identified the danger of the damages increasing during the journey to Turkey, the decision was made to take the vessel for repairs at the Espírito Santo shipyard first.

Modec reported that the FPSO is currently in the Campos Basin, being monitored and that its relocation is still being planned by its technical team.
The company also stated that the entire crew was evacuated as soon as the damages were identified, and that only decommissioning teams are currently working on the preparations for the removal of the unit.

These teams are made up of Modec itself, the Brazilian Navy, and Petrobras. The latter is responsible for the unit’s concession.
