MODEC, The Japanese FPSO Operator, Is Working To Clean And Disperse Remaining Oil After An Oil Spill At The Espadarte Field, Operated By Petrobras, Off The Coast Of Brazil Last Friday

Operated by Modec and serving Petrobras since 2007, the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro ended its production cycle in July 2018 and has been in the demobilization process since then.

Last Friday, August 23, MODEC informed Petrobras that, after inspecting the external tanks, cracks were found in the hull of the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, at the Espadarte field, in the Campos Basin, 130 km off the coast of Brazil.

The previous weekend, 1.2 cubic meters of residual oil leaked from the unit, which was identified and recovered.

On Tuesday, August 27, MODEC reported that the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro was stable and in normal draft and tilt conditions in the Campos Basin. Some of our followers, who are in the operation, reported that the internal cleaning of the tanks has already been successfully executed.

An aerial survey conducted on Tuesday observed a significant reduction in the oil slick, which was approximately 0.4 m³ in size.

On Wednesday, August 28, MODEC announced that a rescue team had boarded the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro to assess the vessel’s condition and determine the best strategy to complete the decommissioning and removal of the platform.

Highlighting that decommissioning operations will generate around 50,000 jobs in the next 5 years, learn more about it here and stay tuned for opportunities in this market.

Based on this evaluation, MODEC and Petrobras will be able to define the best strategy to decommission and remove the FPSO unit.

The damage to the hull of the vessel has progressed but remains confined to a single tank, which is a stable scenario, according to the FPSO operator. The draft and tilt conditions remain stable, the company added.

An aerial observation conducted on site concluded that the sheen of oil remains the same. Support vessels are working to clean and disperse the remaining product.
