Frigol, Fourth Largest Meatpacker in the Country, Decides to Invest in Clean Energy to Process Beef and Pork. The Meatpacker, Which Processed 181 Thousand Tons of Beef in 2021, Has Chosen to Enter the Age of Renewable Energy to Avoid Emissions of Pollutants.
This Monday, (07/25), Frigol announced that it will invest in renewable energy for its total operations, mainly for processing beef and pork. The fourth largest meatpacker in Brazil is trying to gain control over the reduction of pollutant gas emissions into the environment through clean energy.
Frigol Will Present Its GHG Report in the First Quarter of 2023
In this regard, in a few months, right in the first quarter of next year, the meatpacking company will present its first GHG (Greenhouse Gas) report. Frigol launched its first sustainability presentation in April of this year and is increasingly looking to reduce its emissions.
The company, based in Lençóis Paulista (SP), is part of the Forbes Agro100 ranking, is among the four largest meatpacking industries in Brazil, and has operations in Pará as well.

Research reveals that the vast majority of national consumers are not willing to pay more for renewable energy despite their support for sustainability.
In 2021, the meatpacker processed 181 thousand tons of beef and 8.7 thousand tons of pork, which resulted in a revenue of R$ 3.1 billion, a 29% increase over the year 2020. Furthermore, of that total, exports went to about 60 countries and yielded R$ 1.2 billion. The entire rush for clean production is part of strategies to prepare for the future.
It is worth emphasizing that GHG reports are a crucial tool for encouraging renewable energy and energy efficiency in organizations. Thus, the energy transition to cleaner sources was one of the main topics at the most recent UN climate summit. “Europe, for example, does not yet require GHG reports, but we are getting ahead,” points out manager Carlos Eduardo Simões Corrêa, director of sustainability and administration at Frigol.
Furthermore, Irena (International Renewable Energy Agency) indicates that 38 new technologies are ready for deployment at the moment, including wind, solar photovoltaic, and geothermal energy. In this way, the Climate Pact establishes a global reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 45% by 2030.
The Company Already Has a Renewable Energy Program and Plans to Expand Even Further
The company began developing the program back in 2016, with its first purchases of renewable energy, an issue that has been a growing market over the years. Additionally, there has been a general decrease in energy costs, with wind energy becoming more competitive and, especially, greater competitiveness in solar energy prices due to increasingly available projects in energy volume for the market.
Data confirms that over the next few years, solar energy is expected to even surpass hydropower in availability. For this reason, the company has been increasingly contracting renewable energy, aiming to transition to an even cleaner matrix. Frigol confirms that the energy can come from wind, solar, and also from small hydroelectric plants.
Moreover, this year, 70% of the company’s demand is covered by renewables, and the expectation is that starting in 2023 it will be 100%. The initial forecast, which is in the company’s commitment outlined in the sustainability report, was set for 2025. However, the meatpacker has managed to advance the start of its 100% renewable energy matrix by two years.
