The Classic Volkswagen Beetle, Which Was Cloned by Chinese Manufacturer Great Wall Motors, May Be One of the News in the Brazilian Market in 2022

As a modern reinterpretation of the famous Beetle, the ORA Punk Cat is one of the electric vehicles that Great Wall Motors registered with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). The electric Beetle from the Chinese manufacturer, which clearly has inspiration from Volkswagen’s classic model, has attracted attention both inside and outside of China, where the largest electric vehicle market in the world exists.

Known as Beetle Käfer or simply Beetle, the model has never been very well known in the People’s Republic, and attracted the attention of the whole world for being an interesting reinterpretation of the sedan that recently ceased production, but is already in its third generation.

With no new electric Beetle planned by Volkswagen, the Chinese manufacturer may have gained motivation to do it themselves, something that even billionaire Elon Musk once commented on regarding an electric model that would bring back the Kombi.

For now, at least Volkswagen will do that, but the brand’s long-time companion is left in limbo. Now, with the electric Beetle, the stylish concept of Volkswagen returns in a large body with four doors.

New Electric Beetle from the Chinese Manufacturer Strays from Minimalism

Although it still has some strange elements, especially the front headlights swapped for the rear lights of the 1500 Beetle, the electric Beetle from the Chinese manufacturer, when viewed from the side, is undoubtedly the German resurrected.

In the concept of the Punk Cat, however, an interior that strays from the minimalism and elegance of Volkswagen presents an environment focused on luxury, which in a way recalls the early days of the model, where only people with great means could afford it.

So far, aside from the “Panamera” proposal from Ora, the electric Beetle seems to be the top-of-the-line model in a more cohesive style range, even if the trio R1/R2/R3 resembles models like Soul, Twingo, and something close to a Porsche. Here, the electric Beetle from the Chinese manufacturer would serve a marketing role, due to the resemblance, unless there are issues with Volkswagen.

Great Wall Motors announced it will bring electric and hybrid cars to the national market, but for now, we must wait to see how the electric Beetle performs in the Chinese market.

GWM Will Invest R$ 4 Billion in Factory in Brazil

According to GWM’s director of government and external relations, Pedro Betancourt, the company is based on constant innovation, and this will not change in national territory.

The company plans to invest R$ 4 billion to expand production in the factory in Iracemápolis to up to 100,000 vehicles per year. However, in the national market, the Chinese manufacturer’s models will arrive in the first half of 2022 as imports, but local production is expected to start only in 2023.

This is due to the fact that the company only acquired fixed assets and not operating licenses, billing systems, or existing qualifications, necessitating that everything starts from scratch.
