Together, Route 3 and Two Other Pipelines from Petrobras (Routes 1 and 2) Are Expected to Transport About 44 Million Cubic Meters of Gas per Day.
The oil and gas sector in Brazil, which has been bringing profits, has high expectations for 2022: the start of activities in Petrobras’ Route 3 pipeline, which will bring gas from the pre-salt to the coast. The Route 3 Pipeline has approximately 355 kilometers (km) in total length, with 307 km corresponding to the offshore segment and 48 km corresponding to the onshore section.
Petrobras, which was preparing to begin operations for Route 3, stated on March 23, to the news outlet PetroNotícias that the final stage of the commissioning process and the testing of the onshore and shallow segments are expected to take place in the early second half of the year, considering that, at the beginning of 2022, Petrobras had already started operations of the deep section of the pipeline. Meanwhile, the state-owned company, which recently signed a million-dollar contract with Ocyan, has been working on the final phase of the shallow offshore section, which aims to connect spool 2 for linking the shallow and deep sections in 58 meters of water depth. The works on the onshore section between the beach and the Gaslub Pole (which is the former Comperj) have already been completed.
Operational testing at the Gaslub Pole began in late January by Petrobras. The pole began receiving unprocessed natural gas (rich gas) sourced from the Cabiúnas Terminal, which entered through the Guapimirim-Comperj I (Gaserj) pipeline, enabling the start of operations for utility systems, primarily the Steam Generation and Distribution Unit. The systems in question will be responsible for ensuring the supply of essential facilities and equipment for the operation of the UPGN, which is expected to occur this year.

Regarding the sections of the Petrobras pipeline, the deep part of Route 3 is 297 km long, consisting of water depths ranging from 58 meters to 2,190 meters. The shallow section is situated in water depths starting from 58 meters, with an approximate length of 10 km. When the operations of Route 3 actually begin, the gas flow rate will be close to 18 million cubic meters (m³) of gas per day.
Thus, the gas to be transported by the Route 3 pipeline will undergo treatment at the Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN) at the Gaslub Pole. The plant will be completed with a capacity to transport and process 21 million cubic meters (m³) of natural gas per day sourced from the pre-salt fields in the Santos Basin. With the simultaneous operation of Route 3, Route 1 (UPGN Caraguatatuba/SP), and Route 2 (Cabiúnas Terminal/RJ), Petrobras’ pipelines will achieve a total capacity to transport 44 million cubic meters of gas per day.
In addition to the units that are undergoing testing and experimentation, the water treatment station, the substations responsible for distributing electrical energy to the project, the Integrated Control Center (CIC), the auxiliary utility systems, and the flare (equipment that burns waste gases) are all already operational.
Petrobras Forms Partnership and Allocates R$ 300 Million for Social Program for Access to Cooking Gas and Food Provision, Benefiting Over 4 Million People
Petrobras announced yesterday (03/21), in a relevant fact, that it has formed a partnership with the social organization Gastromotiva to expand food provision for people in situations of food insecurity in major urban centers across five states in the country. The initiative, which aims to distribute up to 1.5 million meals, is one of the actions of Petrobras’ social program for access to cooking gas (liquefied petroleum gas – LPG), for which the company will allocate up to R$ 300 million by the end of this year. On Friday (03/18), an event was held at Gastromotiva’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro to mark the start of the partnership. To learn more, click here to read the full article.
