General Motors Made The Right Car, At The Right Price, With Sufficient Range, In The Right Place, At The Right Time. The Tiny Electric Costs Ten Times Less Than The American Model And Makes Tesla Tremble

After absolute success on its hands, with the Mini EV, which became the best-selling electric car in China, mainly due to its starting price of around US$ 4,500, the joint venture Saic-GM, which manufactures and sells vehicles under the Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac brands in Mainland China, came up with the idea of leveraging this success to boost sales of an even cheaper car, the Wuling NanoEV, which is expected to cost around $3,100, or R$ 17,000 at the current exchange rate. The tiny vehicle was a bold bet from General Motors for a strange market niche, where things that copy the identity of famous products gain notoriety through explicit cloning, as is the case recently announced by Click Petróleo e Gás, where a Chinese manufacturer cloned the iconic Volkswagen Kombi, shortly after shamelessly producing an electric copy of the Beetle.

Although it is an electric car whose commercialization is limited to the Chinese market, given the numbers it intends to collect and based on the importance of this market on a global level, it is worth noting that the cheapest electric car in the world, developed by General Motors, is achieving unprecedented success.

Like the Hong Guang, the new Nano EV is an extremely compact electric car. It measures 2,497 millimeters in length, 1,526 millimeters in width, and 1,616 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 1,600 millimeters. With these external dimensions and its reduced wheelbase, its turning radius is limited to 3.8 meters, which is ideal for entering and exiting tight spaces.

It is precisely this segment, that of micro electric cars, which is giving China such a generous market share in terms of electric vehicles. In addition to the Wuling NANO EV and the Hong Guang, the Chery QQ Ice Cream has also been launched recently.

The technical aspect is marked by the power of its electric motor, which generates 24 kW of maximum power (not to mention the nominal) and a remarkable 85 Nm of maximum torque. General Motors also does not specify the exact capacity of its battery, but with a full charge using the old NEDC cycle, they claim it reaches a range of up to 3.05 kilometers. Regarding charging, there is a “fast” charger option through which it can replenish energy at up to 6.6 kW of power, meaning it can be fully charged in 4.5 hours.

General Motors Reports That Over 40% Of The Nano EV Body Is Made Of High-Strength Steel And Hot-Formed Steel

In line with its lower-range sibling, to improve safety, according to General Motors more than 40% of the Nano EV body is made of high-strength steel and hot-formed steel. It also features electronic stability control, electronic braking force distribution, hill-start assist, tire pressure monitoring system, and reverse radar.

However, being one of its weak points according to Hong Guang, the NANO EV only has a few seats, and thus the company defines it as “a two-seater electric vehicle with a practical ‘Free’ design. Two Go ‘that is tailor-made for the needs of today’s young and independent generation and couples who enjoy the fun of moving.”

With the start of its sale, Wuling also announced the final prices of this peculiar electric car. There will be three versions available that will mainly depend on the finish, and its price will range between 49,800 and 59,800 Chinese yuan, which translates at the current exchange to a range between 6,930 and 8,320 euros. For the maximum price, almost the electric Dacia Spring is marketed in Spain, although to do so you have to opt for the Moves III Plan and trade in a car over seven years old for its scrapping.

The Mini EV Is So Successful In China That General Motors Wants To Market It In Europe

With Shanghai-GM behind it, the Mini EV means that it is not a low-quality clone made by a rustic manufacturer from the countryside of China, but a player ready to go beyond the country’s borders.

The ambition of the Chinese division is to reach 1.2 million units sold in 2022! That is almost all electric vehicle manufacturers in the country in 2020.

In this way, the Mini EV is a serious candidate for the best-selling electric car in the world, costing ten times less than the American model, which makes Tesla tremble.

Chinese Manufacturer Clones The Iconic Volkswagen Kombi, Shortly After Shamelessly Producing An Electric Copy Of The Beetle

The Chinese industry has not yet abandoned some old habits, and the multinational Volkswagen was not flattered at all by the electric car manufacturer ORA, which is part of the Great Wall Motors group. The brand recently showcased a clone of the Beetle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Named ORA Punk Cat, the vehicle has the same features as the iconic VW car. To make matters worse, another Chinese manufacturer, SongSang Motors, cloned the iconic Kombi; will this lead to “a lot of trouble”?

The Chinese manufacturer launched a new model inspired by an already existing one. In this case, it is the SongSang Motors that introduced the SS Summer, a van with a retro design clearly based on the Volkswagen Kombi or Type 2, as can be seen below.
