General Motors Grows In The EV Market And Has Now Launched A New Electric Car That Promises To Be A Sales Leader. The Vehicle Is Cheaper Than The Chevrolet Onix Plus.

As part of a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC, Wuling has begun pre-sales of a new ‘affordable’ electric car in the overseas market, but with the size of a large sedan. It’s called the Wuling Starlight EV and complements the line started by the plug-in hybrid version, launched in China in November and which has already sold over 50,000 units. The model costs much less than the Chevrolet Onix Plus itself.

How Much Does The New Electric Car From General Motors Cost?

The price is competitive, as the Starlight EV starts at 109,800 yuan in the Chinese market, equivalent to R$ 77 thousand in direct conversion at the current exchange rate. It is much cheaper than the Chevrolet Onix Plus itself, which starts at R$ 99,490 with a 1.0 aspirated engine.

Based on the Tianyu EV platform, which could also allow for the launch of full hybrid and extended range electric versions with gasoline engines, the Wuling Starlight EV only differs by having a different front bumper, without air intakes and with independent LED signatures.

In the hybrid version of the model, a light bar crosses the front of the vehicle. This new electric car from General Motors is quite spacious by Brazilian standards. It measures 4.83 m in length, 1.86 m in width, 1.51 m in height, and has a long 2.80 m wheelbase. The slender body style contributes to the car’s aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.22 Cd, making it the cheapest electric car compared to the Chevrolet Onix Plus.

New Electric Car From General Motors Delivers Up To 510 Km Of Range

The new model features only one electric motor with 136 horsepower, which can be powered by two LFP batteries. One of 41.9 kWh, offering a range of 410 km in the WLTP cycle, or 54.3 kWh, to run 510 km between charges. The maximum speed of the new electric car from General Motors is 150 km/h.

Inside, the vehicle that is cheaper than the Chevrolet Onix Plus stands out with its 8.8-inch instrument panel, which is standard across the line, but the multimedia center can feature a screen of 10.1 or 15.6 inches, and the driver can have a seat with electric adjustment.

The trunk has a capacity of 540 liters. The pre-sale of the electric car remains open until May 31; however, the Wuling Starlight EV will only be presented to the public for the first time at the Beijing Auto Show at the end of this month.

General Motors Wants To Compete With BYD

The BYD Dolphin May Have Gained A Strong Competitor In China. It is the Wuling Bingo Plus, a compact electric SUV developed by General Motors. Sold in options of up to 75 kW (102 hp), the model is derived from the electric hatch Bingo, which sold more than 200,000 units in 2023. The Plus version starts at 89,800 yuan, about R$ 63 thousand in direct conversion.

Measuring 4.03 meters in length, the Wuling Bingo Plus is a bit smaller than a Volkswagen Polo (4.07 m). Additionally, it also measures 1.72 m in width and 1.57 m in height, with a wheelbase of 2.61 m – 4 cm smaller than a Virtus.

The design features modern lines, highlighted by the angular headlights at the front and a floating roof style. The electric car, equipped with a front electric motor of 102 hp and 180 Nm, can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 3.7 seconds.
