General Motors Made The Right Car At The Right Price, With Sufficient Range, In The Right Place, At The Right Time. The Tiny Electric Costs Ten Times Less Than The American Model And Makes Tesla Tremble

After absolute success on its hands, with the Mini EV, which became the best-selling electric car in China, mainly due to its initial price of around US $4,500, the Saic-GM joint venture, which manufactures and sells vehicles under the Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac brands in Mainland China, had the idea to leverage this success to boost sales of an even cheaper car, the Wuling NanoEV, which will cost the equivalent of $3,100 or R$ 17,000 at the current exchange rate. The tiny vehicle was a bold bet from General Motors for a strange market niche, where things that copy the identity of famous products gain notoriety through explicit cloning, as recently announced by Click Petroleum and Gas, where a Chinese manufacturer cloned the iconic Volkswagen Kombi, right after shamelessly making an electric copy of the Beetle.

There’s much more to the charm and success of this car, which offers exactly what consumers want and nothing they don’t want. In just a few months, the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV, unveiled by General Motors in China in August 2020, became one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the country. The small car gained so much popularity that it’s compared to the Tesla Model 3.

In the case of the Mini EV, the proposal was for an unpretentious mini urban car with a very low price, as this segment adopts. The US $4,500 (R$ 22,710, ten times less than Tesla’s product) praised by the global press is nothing compared to what’s out there, but the Hong Guang has a differential.

The tiny car is 2.50 m long, 1.60 m wide, 1.52 m tall, and has a height of 1.61 m. It’s as small as the Baojun, but weaker. Instead of 39 hp and 11 kgfm, it has 33 hp and 8.5 kgfm. The battery has the same capacity, 28 kWh, and guarantees a range of 305 km in the NEDC cycle, which tends to be optimistic. Weighing 860 kg, its maximum speed is 100 km/h.

GM simply saw 270,000 units sold in just nine months. Based in Liuzhou, Wuling is rolling up its sleeves with other products that will be globally available, and the Mini EV is taking advantage of that as well.

The Mini EV Is So Successful In China That General Motors Wants To Market It In Europe

With Shanghai-GM behind it, the Mini EV means it’s not a low-quality clone made by a rustic manufacturer from inland China, but rather a player ready even to go beyond the country’s borders.

The ambition of the Chinese division is to reach 1.2 million units sold in 2022! That’s almost as much as all electric manufacturers in the country produced in 2020.

With 100% online sales, the Chinese brand speaks directly to customers, listening to consumers and manufacturing what they want, like the Macaron version (colors reminiscent of fruits and sweets), while offering 20 colors and a lot of stickers for customization, which is nonexistent in traditional brands.

Such is the enthusiasm that SAIC and General Motors have for its success that they want to market it in Europe. To that end, they are already in negotiations with a company in Latvia to achieve competitive manufacturing costs.

Going down this path, the Mini EV is a serious contender for the best-selling electric car in the world, costing ten times less than the American model, which makes Tesla tremble.

Chinese Manufacturer Clones The Iconic Volkswagen Kombi, Right After Shamelessly Making An Electric Copy Of The Beetle

The Chinese industry has not yet abandoned some old habits, and the Volkswagen multinational is not flattered at all by the electric car manufacturer ORA, which is part of the Great Wall Motors group. The brand recently showcased a clone of the Beetle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Named ORA Punk Cat, the vehicle has the same features as the iconic VW car. As if that weren’t enough, another Chinese manufacturer, SongSang Motors, cloned the iconic Kombi; will it cause “a stir”?

The Chinese manufacturer launched a new model inspired by an already existing one. In this case, it’s the SongSang Motors that presented the SS Summer, a van with a retro design clearly based on the Volkswagen Kombi or Type 2, as can be seen below.
