Closed since around 2009, the Simon Hotel in the Itatiaia National Park swapped old luxury for deterioration and became a highlight on social media
In the Itatiaia National Park, in Rio de Janeiro, the Simon Hotel, inaugurated in the late 1930s and deactivated around 2009, became a symbol of abandonment, an architectural memory, and a growing interest on social media and in urbex.
Built in the lower part of the park, near the Three Peaks Trail, the Simon Hotel was created by Josef Simon. The space was designed to host explorers and high society tourists visiting the region.
Peak of the structure
At its height, the Simon Hotel had 60 rooms, large halls, and a privileged view of nature.

Closure and wear
Activities were suspended around 2009. Since then, the hotel has remained closed and faces natural deterioration caused by time and the humid climate of the mountains.
Today, closed doors, walls covered in moss, and silent environments reinforce the image of abandonment that has taken over the building for more than a decade.
New interest
Even deactivated, the Simon Hotel gained another function. The building began to attract urbex practitioners, an acronym used for urban exploration, and became one of the most coveted spots in Brazil for this type of visit.
Viralization of the hotel on social media
Videos and photos published on Instagram and TikTok show dark corridors, rooms with period furniture, and an atmosphere marked by the feeling of time standing still. This scenario helped the Simon Hotel to go viral and expand its recent fame.
