The New Raízen Plant in Jataí Promises to Generate Jobs, Expand Second-Generation Ethanol Production, and Strengthen the Local Economy with a Focus on Renewable Energies.

Raízen announced a major news that promises to shake up the biofuels sector in Brazil: the construction of a new second-generation ethanol (E2G) plant in the city of Jataí, Goiás. This investment of R$ 1.2 billion marks an important step in the company’s expansion outside the state of São Paulo, where its current E2G plants are located. With the project, the company aims to increase the production of sustainable ethanol and strengthen its operations in renewable energies, as well as generate jobs and boost the local economy.

New Raízen Plant Will Bring Innovation and Sustainability to Jataí

The new Raízen plant will be built next to an existing unit in Jataí, integrating advanced technology to produce second-generation ethanol. This type of biofuel is made from waste, such as straw and sugarcane bagasse, which are materials typically discarded. The use of this raw material means that the process has a lower environmental impact since it makes the most of the available resources, contributing to the reduction of waste and carbon emissions.

The construction project will be divided into stages, starting with the basic infrastructure, which includes the access road and the installation of essential equipment for the plant’s operation. Subsequently, the processing terminal will be built, allowing the production of cellulosic ethanol to be done with high efficiency. The forecast is that the plant will start operating in 2028, when it will be ready to meet the growing demand for low-emission biofuels.

Generation of Thousands of Direct and Indirect Jobs

In addition to promoting sustainable development, the new ethanol plant will have a considerable impact on the economy of Jataí and the region, with the creation of 168 direct jobs and about a thousand indirect jobs during the construction period. These positions range from workers and technicians on the site to service and material suppliers, boosting the local economy.

It is expected that, with the operation of the new plant, more opportunities will be generated, not only in ethanol production but also in sectors like logistics and services, which will need to grow along with the increasing demand for transportation and product supply. For Jataí, which is already an agricultural hub in the state, Raízen’s arrival reinforces the region’s importance in the national energy and biofuels scenario.

What Is Second-Generation Ethanol?

The second-generation ethanol (E2G), or cellulosic ethanol, is a renewable fuel that differs from traditional ethanol by being produced from plant waste. By using straw and sugarcane bagasse, the production process manages to utilize materials that would otherwise be discarded, reducing waste and lowering carbon emissions.

This type of ethanol is seen as an essential alternative for the future of fuels, especially in markets looking to reduce their carbon footprints. Raízen, by investing in new E2G plants, reinforces its commitment to sustainability and positions itself as one of the leaders in the global biofuels market.

Raízen’s Expansion Beyond São Paulo

So far, Raízen’s E2G production has been concentrated in São Paulo, with plants located in Piracicaba and Guariba. The decision to expand to Goiás is part of a strategic plan to diversify the location of its operations and better meet the demands of the domestic and international markets. The state of Goiás, with a strong presence in agribusiness, offers favorable conditions for the growth of biofuel production, making Jataí a strategic choice.

The new plant is also part of an expansion package that includes two other units under construction, which are expected to start operating in the 2025/26 harvest in Barra Bonita and Valparaíso, both in the state of São Paulo. Raízen’s goal is to increase the combined capacity of its E2G plants to 82 million liters of ethanol per year, consolidating its position as a reference in the sector.

The New Raízen Plant in Jataí and Other Future Perspectives

The project for the new Raízen plant in Jataí is the result of an investment plan initiated in 2022, which included an important agreement with Shell, one of its main partners. This contract ensured the advance sale of ethanol for 10 years, worth R$ 3.3 billion, helping to finance the construction of the new plants.

This business model allows Raízen to secure demand for its production, especially in the European market, where cellulosic ethanol is highly sought after as an alternative to fossil fuels. Additionally, markets like the United States and Japan are also showing promise for the export of biofuels, expanding growth opportunities for the company.

Why the New Plant Is a Milestone for the Sector?

The construction of this new ethanol plant represents a breakthrough not only for Raízen but for the entire biofuels sector in Brazil. With the world turning its attention to renewable energies and solutions that help mitigate the effects of climate change, the production of second-generation ethanol stands out as a viable and sustainable option.

This investment reinforces Raízen’s commitment to technological innovation and a low-carbon economy, in addition to encouraging other companies in the sector to follow suit. The development of new technologies for the production of renewable fuels, combined with the expansion into new regions, makes Raízen a leading player in the global energy transition.
