BYD, a renowned Chinese electric vehicle company, surprised everyone by announcing that it will double the number of job openings planned for the first phase of its new factory in Bahia. The decision was revealed by Marcelo Schneider, BYD’s institutional director, during the Brazil China Meeting, an event that brings together companies and authorities from both countries. The goal is to accelerate the production of vehicles in the unit, which is expected to start between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.

Schneider revealed that the early opening of job positions was influenced by the Brazilian government’s decision to reinstate the Import Tax on 100% electric cars, which had been suspended since 2016, and to increase taxes on hybrid vehicles.

The total investment for the first phase of the factory in Bahia reaches R$ 3 billion, aimed at a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.
Subsequently, the installed capacity will double, reaching 300,000 units annually.
The strategic decision to accelerate the hiring process seeks to align with changes in legislation and ensure efficient production.
Schneider emphasized the importance of Brazil for BYD, being the only country outside China to receive investments across various sectors, from buses and monorails to trucks, forklifts, and electric cars.
The executive reiterated the company’s commitment to the Brazilian market and the need to seize the occasion to expand its operations.
Chinese Manufacturer Reinforces Commitment To Brazil With Investments Beyond Electric Cars
In addition to the increase in job opportunities, Schneider announced changes in the manufacturing plant in Camaçari (BA).
In February, an expansion project will begin that will essentially create a new factory and a renewed structure.
The factory, previously owned by Ford, was acquired by the government of Bahia to be transferred to BYD.
The executive also confirmed the launch in February of the Dolphin Mini, a compact and more affordable version of the model that stood out in the Brazilian market as the 100% electric car with the lowest cost, valued at R$ 149,900.
During the event, Jolin Zhang, director of BYD’s American sales division, presented impressive data on the company’s performance in 2023.
The revenue reached US$ 61.7 billion, representing a 56% increase compared to 2022.
