The Privatization Of Copel
News Announced In November
The privatization of the Gas-Powered Power Plant of Araucária had already been announced in November by the Government of Paraná, which is the majority shareholder of Copel. The announcement stated that it aimed to transform Copel into a company without a controlling shareholder, as the State has already approved such a decision, renouncing the majority of the shares. The approved law also authorizes the State to privatize Copel’s subsidiaries.
The plant that will be sold is a partnership between Petrobras and Copel, where natural gas is generated through the combined cycle, with two gas turbines and one steam turbine, and is located near the GASBOL plant, a gas pipeline from Bolivia. The plant started operating in 2002, with a total capacity of 484 MW.
