Considered the Heart of the Plant, the Gas Turbine that Will Be Part of UTE GNA I is the Most Efficient of Its Kind to Arrive in Brazil
GNA – Gás Natural Açu, a joint venture between Prumo Logística, BP, and Siemens, has taken another important step in building the largest natural gas thermoelectric complex in Latin America, which totals 3 GW. The company received, on Tuesday, April 30th, the first combined cycle gas turbine of UTE GNA I, the main equipment that will make up the power island of the thermoelectric plant.
Supplied by Siemens, the GT 13 gas turbine, model SGT6-8000H (class H), is the most efficient of its kind to arrive in Brazil. The equipment weighs about 291 tons, is 11 meters long, 4.8 meters high, and will have a thermal capacity of 1.3 GW (considering three gas turbines).

The turbine shipped at the end of March from the Port of Antwerp in Belgium directly to the Multicargo Terminal located at the Port of Açu, opening a new route between the two countries. At the end of the civil works, the turbine will be coupled to its base. The other turbines are expected to arrive at the Port of Açu in the coming months.
In total, the power island of UTE GNA I comprises three SGT6-8000H gas turbines, one steam turbine, as well as three heat recovery generators and instrumentation and control systems, equipment with a high level of efficiency that will generate a power of approximately 1.3 GW. In addition to the installation, the contract with Siemens includes long-term service provision for the operation and maintenance of the plant.
“The arrival of the first turbine of UTE GNA I is yet another important milestone for the progress of our project. The thermoelectric complex that GNA is building at the Port of Açu will contribute to the diversification of Brazil’s energy matrix and to energy security through natural gas, a reliable and accessible energy source”, says Bernardo Perseke, CEO of GNA.
Scheduled to start operations in January 2021, the UTE GNA I project consists of a 1.3 GW natural gas thermoelectric plant in combined cycle, a LNG regasification terminal of 21 million cubic meters/day, a transmission line, and a substation, which will connect the thermoelectric plant to the National Interconnected System (SIN).
To enable the project’s implementation, GNA signed financing contracts with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), totaling US$ 288 million, and another for R$ 1.76 billion obtained from BNDES and KfW IPEX-Bank, which is responsible for financing international projects and exports of the KfW Group, in an unprecedented partnership for the institutions.
In addition to UTE GNA I, the company will build UTE GNA II, with an installed capacity of 1.7 GW. Together, the two thermoelectric plants total 3 GW, enough to supply about 14 million households.
GNA also has an environmental license to more than double its installed capacity, potentially reaching 6.4 GW, which will allow for the development of additional thermoelectric projects in the future.
