Active in the Brazilian Natural Gas Market, Golar Power Eyes the Interiorization of BioGNL and Launches the Largest Public Call to Purchase 5 Million m³/Day of Biogas
Golar Power, one of the most active companies in the process of opening up the Brazilian natural gas market, is launching an unprecedented public call to purchase 5 million cubic meters per day (m³/day) of biogas – the largest contract of its kind in the country. The interest comes right after the company’s president, Eduardo Antonello, has become the target of investigations by Lava-Jato over corruption allegations from when he worked at Seadrill.

The company states that if successful, the biogas contracting project could more than triple the production of biogas in Brazil. This unprecedented call in the country is part of Golar’s project for the distribution of liquefied biogas (BioGNL) on a small scale via highways and coastal shipping, using iso-containers.
The Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) currently acquired by Golar Power comes through LNG import terminals, via road from Argentina. With the biogas call, there will be the possibility to produce BioGNL, which can be used in the automotive market as well as in industry and commerce.

The potential suppliers for Golar would be the sugarcane industries in the Southeast and animal protein industries in the South, in addition to landfills. The call could signal security for investors interested in producing biogas on a large scale. Possible consumers of BioGNL include agribusiness and the energy-intensive ceramics market.
The official announcement of the public notice will be made during a webinar on the morning of this day (01), at 10:30 AM, and will feature participation from the International Center for Renewable Energy (CIBiogás) and the Brazilian Biogas Association (ABiogás) along with participation from BR Distribuidora and Alliance GNLog. Golar Power Projects in Brazil
Currently, Golar Power is competing for the lease of Petrobras’s LNG terminal in Bahia. The state-owned company, however, informed that it is reviewing Golar’s integrity analysis and the company’s participation in the bid may be suspended.
In addition to competing for Petrobras’s LNG terminal in Bahia, the company is negotiating a partnership with BR Distribuidora to market LNG at retail. The agreement stipulates that BR will purchase up to 50% of Golar Distribuidora, but after the disclosure of the investigations by Operation Lava-Jato, Petrobras raised questions to BR, where it is a shareholder, about the potential partnership.
Golar Power is one of the main players in the LNG market in Brazil. In partnership with EBrasil, through Celse, the company inaugurated this year the country’s first private regasification terminal in Sergipe, in a project integrated with a thermoelectric plant. The company has plans for three more terminals of this type in the country, in Babitonga Bay (SC), Barcarena (PA), and Suape Port (PE).
