Google Maps has launched a massive update now available in the United States and India. The new version includes 3D navigation with a real perspective of overpasses, traffic lights, and buildings, real-time alternative route selection, and integration with Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence that accepts voice commands while driving.

The Google Maps has just received what the company itself classifies as the biggest update in the last 10 years. Now available in the United States and India, the new version of the app brings 3D navigation with a real perspective of overpasses, buildings, and traffic lights, as well as real-time alternative route selection with three-dimensional visualization. But the most impressive feature is the integration of Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence, which allows users to converse with the app via voice commands while driving.

The Google Maps update also includes the Ask Maps feature, which uses artificial intelligence to answer complex questions about locations, opening hours, user reviews, and even create personalized travel itineraries. The 3D navigation will also work on Android Auto and CarPlay, allowing users to take advantage of the feature on larger screens in vehicles. The expectation is that Google Maps will bring these updates to Brazil in the coming months, as the country’s 3D scanning database is expanded.

3D Navigation on Google Maps: overpasses, buildings, and traffic lights in real perspective

Google Maps received the biggest update in 10 years: 3D navigation with real perspective, visual alternative routes, and voice AI while driving.

The main novelty of Google Maps is immersive 3D navigation. In addition to the traditional 2D option, the app now shows the route with a real three-dimensional perspective.

If you pass under an overpass or between two buildings, Google Maps shows navigation from that exact perspective, including traffic lights, signs, and any other visible items on the road. The idea is that the driver will never miss a turn due to lack of visual reference.

The 3D navigation of Google Maps solves an old problem: on multi-lane roads, the 2D view did not allow knowing exactly which lane the vehicle was in. With the three-dimensional perspective, GPS accuracy is much greater, and the driver can identify the correct lane before making a maneuver.

The switch between 2D and 3D is possible at any time, and in areas where 3D scanning is not available, the app continues to function in traditional mode. The feature will also be available on Android Auto and CarPlay, which is especially useful on larger screens.

Real-time alternative route selection with 3D visualization on Google Maps

Google Maps received the biggest update in 10 years: 3D navigation with real perspective, visual alternative routes, and voice AI while driving.

Another feature that significantly improves the experience on Google Maps is real-time alternative route selection with 3D visualization. Previously, the option to change routes was hidden and made navigation difficult.

Now, when the driver is on a congested road, Google Maps shows an alternative path directly on the three-dimensional map. Just click, and the route is automatically redirected.

With the 3D perspective, the driver sees the vehicle from above and clearly identifies the exact maneuver needed to access the alternative route. As they approach the exit, Google Maps automatically zooms in to facilitate visualization.

This feature is especially useful on long trips, where routes with similar times did not always appear clearly in the previous version. The combination of 3D navigation with real-time route selection represents a leap in usability for Google Maps.

Gemini at the wheel: how artificial intelligence works within Google Maps

Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence, is now directly integrated into Google Maps navigation. This means that the driver can converse with the app via voice commands while driving, without taking their hands off the wheel.

A dedicated Gemini icon appears next to the next maneuver on the Google Maps screen. By activating it, the driver can ask any questions related to the route, nearby locations, or services available along the way.

The possibilities are vast. The driver can ask Gemini to show gas stations with prices below a certain value, nearby hotels under R$ 200 per night, restaurants open at a certain time, or for Google Maps to avoid dirt roads on the route.

It is also possible to ask how many traffic jams exist in the next few kilometers and schedule stops based on that information. Gemini transforms Google Maps into a complete travel assistant, functioning by voice and without interrupting navigation.

Ask Maps: travel planning with artificial intelligence on Google Maps

The Ask Maps feature works outside of active navigation and serves for planning. Users can ask complex questions to Google Maps, such as which vegan restaurants are open until 11 PM in a certain city, which tourist attractions open on weekends, or how much tickets to a water park cost.

Google Maps responds based on its vast database, including reviews from Google Local Guides users.

The feature also allows for creating complete travel itineraries. Users can ask Google Maps to create a route from Porto Alegre to São Paulo passing through the main tourist attractions of each state, over a certain number of days.

The app automatically builds the route, prioritizing time and fuel savings. This type of functionality positions Google Maps not only as a GPS but as an intelligent travel planner, something no competitor offers with the same level of integration.

When does the Google Maps update arrive in Brazil

The new version of Google Maps is currently available in the United States and India. These two markets were chosen for having greater road complexity, larger populations, and the most advanced 3D scanning base.

For Brazil, the arrival depends on the expansion of Google Maps’ three-dimensional database in Brazilian cities. In areas where there is no scanning, 3D navigation does not work, which limits the immediate launch in the country.

Still, the expectation is that AI-based features, such as Gemini in navigation and Ask Maps, will reach Brazil before the full 3D navigation.

This Google Maps update is considered the most significant of the last decade and is expected to redefine the standard of what is expected from a navigation app. Competitors like Waze and Apple Maps will have to respond quickly to avoid falling behind.

Are you looking forward to this update?
