Gas for the People is Changing the Lives of Millions of Brazilians: Free Recharges Can Be Made by the Family Responsible Person Directly at the Retailers That Joined the Program. By March, the Initiative Will Benefit About 50 Million People
Brazil is experiencing a concrete transformation in how to support low-income families in acquiring cooking gas: the Gas for the People program, with its free recharge voucher, will begin to reach millions of Brazilians starting in February 2026.
This initiative from Caixa in partnership with the Federal Government ensures that families registered in CadÚnico with a per capita income of up to half the minimum wage are entitled to a free refill of a 13 kg LPG cylinder directly at accredited retailers.
What is the Gas for the People Recharge Voucher and How Does It Work
The Gas for the People program is a recent public policy that replaces the old Gas Aid for Brazilians and delivers the benefit in the form of a recharge voucher for refilling the cooking gas cylinder (GLP 13 kg).
-
The government requests the Federal Revenue Service for a new system to automate the income tax declaration, reducing errors, time, and bureaucracy for millions of Brazilians.
-
Pix in installments, international Pix, and contactless payment without internet: the Central Bank revealed the new features coming to the tool that is already used by almost every adult in Brazil.
-
Mercado Livre has just started selling medications with delivery in up to three hours to your door, and this move could completely change the way Brazilians buy medicines on a daily basis.
-
In Dubai, rising tensions from the war in the Middle East are causing super-rich individuals to leave the Gulf and direct their fortunes to a new financial refuge in Asia.
Starting on February 23, about 4.5 million families will begin to receive this benefit in the third distribution phase, and the expectation is that by March 2026 approximately 15 million families (around 50 million people) across the country will be benefited.
The process is simple:
- The family responsible person exchanges the cylinder directly at the accredited retailer.
- The recharge validation is done electronically at the time of purchase via the azulzinha (card machine).
- The accepted access methods include:
- Chip card from Bolsa Família + password,
- Debit card from Caixa + password,
- CPF of the family responsible person with a validation code sent via SMS.
Who Can Receive the Benefit
To be eligible for the Gas for the People recharge voucher, the family must meet several criteria defined by the government:
- Be registered in the Single Registry for Social Programs (CadÚnico) with data updated for at least 24 months.
- Have a per capita family income of up to half the minimum wage.
- CPF of the family responsible person regular and without pending issues, no cadastral investigation or indications of death.
- Priority is given to families who already receive Bolsa Família.
These requirements seek to ensure focus on those who really need it and simplify the operation.
What Changed in Relation to the Gas Aid for Brazilians
Before the Gas for the People, the Gas Aid for Brazilians provided a financial transfer to help buy the cylinder. With the new public policy, sanctioned by Law No. 15.348/2026, the benefit is no longer just monetary but is now provided directly in the form of free refills, making diversions more difficult and ensuring that the gas is indeed used for the right purpose.
Moreover, this law makes the program a permanent public policy, strengthening social protection in the long term.
The Social Importance of Gas for the People for Brazilians
Ensuring access to cooking gas goes far beyond easing financial burdens — it is about improving the quality of life for millions of Brazilians. The lack of access to LPG forces many families to resort to using firewood, charcoal, or kerosene, fuels that expose women, children, and the elderly to unhealthy environments and increase the risks of burns and respiratory diseases.
The Gas for the People recharge voucher also brings positive impacts on food security and reduces vulnerability to household accidents, especially in rural communities and urban peripheries.
Where to Check Your Right to the Benefit
If your family is already in CadÚnico and you want to know if you are entitled to Gas for the People and the recharge voucher, there are official channels for consultation:
- “Meu Social – Gas for the People” App – Check if your family is eligible and where the nearest point is.
- Caixa Citizen Portal – Check the status of your benefit.
- Official Gas for the People Website – Find accredited retailers and more details.
These channels were created to facilitate access for beneficiaries, including providing telephone support and in-person assistance at Caixa points if necessary.
What to Expect Going Forward
With the third distribution phase already underway and ambitious national coverage goals, the Gas for the People program promises to be one of the broadest social policies in recent years in Brazil regarding essential domestic energy.
The initiative not only expands the reach of the old Gas Aid for Brazilians but also modernizes how this assistance is delivered, ensuring that the benefit is indeed consumed as planned.
